2015 Annual Bowswap Progress Thread
« on: January 27, 2015, 09:00:00 AM »
Ok, tradition holds that a new thread get started to document progress in the swap that is separate from the signup thread. Since everyone has now received their victim's name, here we go.

Post all of those sordid details of your build including pictures and personal attacks on Roybert here for all to enjoy. With any luck, we'll hit 100 pages again this year and everyone will finish on time.

Looking good Ink. Can't believe you're so far along already. It's gonna be a good 2months until it warms up enough here for me to do anything .... No heat in the shop.

Wayne, throw all the darts you can find! You've got my blessing. Although the old codger has thick skin, so you're gonna need to throw hard.

Ink, that looks awesome. You definitely got a jump on things this year. I still need to cut off a chunk of walnut and/or cherry and ship off to have some lams ground for me. At least now I know how heavy to make it.

Ben, you never had a shop before. Now that you have one you can't work until it warms up? Work in the house and just vacuum before Dana gets home. Trust me, you're early enough in this whole married thing that it won't be a problem.

Nice ink. Glad to see folks charged and ready to go. Heck I need to cut my tree peel some bark split to stave and dry them yet. I am behind the power curve. Ok I have a stave or 3 ready. So hickory or hedge this year.

I've got to get raw materials myself, but that will happen next month.  I have a lot of what I'm using, just need one or two things here and there.

Between this and my St. Jude's build I should have my hands full, except I'm making myself a new one as well.  Busy year.

I have a bunch of risers ready to use and a stack of bamboo ready to plane. As soon as we're done with moving to a new warehouse at work and all the overtime, I'll be on it.

Working on narrowing down my wood choices... do I make an all South American wood, African wood bow or keep it all American...I am thinking Kingwood and Bocote?

They all sound good Ralph, which ever you choose, I'm sure your recipient will love it.  You always build a beautiful bow.

Ink, you're way ahead of the curve, nice looking bow.

Since I am sitting this year out, I'll be watching and wishing I was in. I developed some kind of a lung condition that no one can explain, so I thought it best to avoid the dust until I get some answers.

I'm sorting through the wood in the shop, and trying to decide on the style to build.

I saw some black Palm at the lumber yard the other day, was interested in it, how do you guys like working with it??

Black Palm makes a beautiful bow wood but can be tedious to work with. I am using it in my trade bow also. It does have a tendency to splinter so watch getting it in your hands. I just dug a couple of splinters from it out of my hand yesterday. When you are done with the bow make sure to coat the black palm in thin super glue. Here is a pic of my first bow I made with it.

Hopefully I will have more pics of my trade bow up on here this weekend that will have black palm in it.

Hers what I'll be workin with! Bocote and zircote riser with zebra accents. Bocote veneers I won from Idaho Curt sometime back. Gotta call Big Jim and get some cores and glass along with a few other goodies!!
