Paul, sorry about the cut, but that is funny.

Been working on the oak pyramid.  It's tillered and pretty much shot in.  Put some finish on but now I'm going to back up and reshape the grip.  Looks like it will end up in the hands of a 12 year old grandson.

Got my Mongolian bow in.  Broke my thumb ring and punched myself in the kisser at @ 95#.  Dislocated my jaw, but it's easy for me to reduce, so all it means is a sore jaw.

I was going to plane some bamboo, but I'm not sure if I should run any power equipment today.
I tried to file my tax return and the system wouldn't let me. Then I went to glue up some taxidermy panels and the biscuit joiner messed up so the holes don't line up. I think I should keep my fingers away from the big machine today.    :readit:
One thing I did seemed to turn out ok though. I tested some home made wood stain on some samples to see what I'd get. This stuff is simple, made from vinegar and steel wool. Well, pine goes brown to red-brown, white oak goes nearly black, red oak goes a kind of ugly gray-red-black, natural bamboo and maple darken some, cherry darkens a lot and walnut looks like blackwood with the end grain going coal black, and black limba goes dark and looks real nice.
I have to give it more time for the reaction to finish, but I think this stain might find it's way onto some bows soon.
Dave.

Dave I believe what you're talking about (iron acetate solution) is one of the classic ways to ebonite wood!

I've been reading into doing exactly that lately. I was thinking of turning some oak shafts jet black.

They say it works because the iron acetate reacts with wood tannins to cause the black color. Woods that are high in tannins like oak and walnut get really black. They also say you can wipe really strong tea ... Yeah like earl grey ... Onto the wood before or even after the iron acetate to make low tannin woods get really black too.

Had a big chunk of osage on two saw horses that I was cutting with a hand saw as my band saw objected to it.Probably weighted about 20 -30lb and of course one end dropped off onto my bare toe. Compound fracture and a stern warning from my doctor to keep out of my work shop for a while. Was going away to a trad shoot couple hours from here now I'm keeping the cat company here at home. Luck sure mores in strange ways.

I did a bunch of hinge cutting on a buddies hunting property yesterday. Not sure there is anything better a person can do to invite critters in.

Started sealing Sixby's bow as well. He and I are swapping work and Im excited!
