Went to my Son's 5th grade "Science Night" at the school.
Basic physics..forces, friction, gravity, Newton's laws..etc

He was a bit of a star as he kept answering the questions shot out to the crowd.
I was/am a proud Dad!

Then we made gravity cars from cardboard, wood skewers, straws, milk caps, and tape.

Raced them down a ramp for time.
We didn't win the races but it was a good time nonetheless.

Don't know how to act.. It's 30 degrees here. Snowing like heck but at least it's above zero for a change..    Took the puppy to the vet for more shots. 13 weeks old, 25.9 pounds.. Wholly crap..

Pushin 50 here, Zwickey and I took a walk on the home place and found a matched set of sheds bout 8 feet apart in the clover patch. Saw em from a hundred yards! Easiest ones ever!

Yep, makes unsealed wood act like a wet noodle. Ever try and tiller a wet noodle? When it bends it seems to stay that way. Just saying......   :rolleyes:

I've been playing with the oak pyramid a bit.  Had a few days of decent weather, but now we're back to the deep freeze.

Was bending and examining the glue joint at the riser and discovered this!  :eek:

 

Squeezed some super glue into the opening but decided it may not be enough.  Since I was paper backing the bow with grocery bag, thought maybe four layers of bag on the joint might solve the problem so on they went with TBIII.

A crisis of faith had me peel the bag off the fade with the intent of applying some automitive fiberglass mat, so off it came.

 

and on went the fiberglass.

 

It's too dang cold to do any more right now.  For some reason the wife does not want me sanding in the house!  :confused:  

Any thoughts on how this is going to hold together?

dont know if any amount of backing will help this- the handle may still try and pop off. you need a different transition from the handle to the limb

If the fade extended further onto the limb it would be less likely to pop off.  The fade you have is ending abruptly where the limb is doing some bending and causing the glue joint to separate.  New handle with longer fades should take care of that problem.  Good luck.

Thanks for the comments.  My hopes aren't high for this bow's survival, but I'll see it through to the end, whatever that might be.

Fujimo, the backing is just a bit of insurance because there was one little squiggle in the edge grain.  It probably did not need backing but many of my bows end up with the grand kids so a bit of extra safety is in order.  

mwosborn, I had to think what you said through a couple times and now get it.  That would be the way to go.  If I thought I could pull that handle off I would and replace it but it's not likely to come off clean.

Yes, have both the band saw and sander.  The band saw is useless but the Rigid oscillating belt is great.  I see what you two are driving at and may succumb.  OTOH, am inclined to see this through and start another employing lessons learned.

hear you on the backing, mike- good idea- its cheap insurance anyway   :D  especially with precious cargo!
 i was reticent to explain the theory earlier- purely because i have the idea in my head- but its a little more difficult to put down on paper -so to speak!
but the board the bow is built out of needs to be thicker than the actual finished thickness of the bow- at the handle area- so in other words- some of that ramp that goes up the handle- actually needs to be part of the same board as the limbs- and then the handle is glued atop that- that minimizes flex in the handle area- so that glue line is not unduly stressed.
now i have seen some folk use multiple thin lams-1/4" or so to build up the handle- and that seems to really make a difference- but as MW said a longer handle- with more gradual ramps will also help a lot, especially with the lighter poundage bows.
but i sure like to build "bend thru the handle" bows- so that is also an option- but you still need thicker wood in the handle area- ('cos one narrows it for the handle usually)- to get the correct bend overall.

Cut the handle off and then glue on another full width handle piece and then make it look like this.

 

Thin the limbs outside of the handle about 1/16" and then tiller.
