Bed frame bow copy (It's got a name)
« on: May 12, 2015, 11:03:00 PM »
Well my sander is still in the shop so I've gotten desperate to build something. I have a set of samick sage limbs that I had on an old compound riser. The riser center was above the low point of the grip so it never work out. SO I while cleaning out my computer archery files I found some pictures I saved of a riser someone built out of an old bed frame. I couldn't help myself so I bought some 1 1/2" angle iron and got started. I decided I wanted a 58" bow so I'm building a 16" riser with 25 degree pad angles. Should be an interesting experiment.     :archer2:
Here's a picture of the original bow that gave me the idea.

Mine so far.

Should we be expecting a change of screen name to "Bedbow"?

Galen, I don't see that riser breaking! I also see a good way to possibly make that adjustable for testing different limb pad angles...

Anyways I need to get off Tradgang and get ready for my interview in 19 minutes.

Interesting and talk about riser stiffness.  One drawback it is going to be very hard on sandpaper. rmorris has a good idea, that could make a good test bed.

Good luck Ralph and that's hard to say since I'd miss having you around.
Here are some pictures of the progress so far.
I cut away a bunch of excess steel and am ready to start using the grinder to get the shape closer. Once that's done I'll work on getting the wood layed up. I drilled and tapped the bolt holes and will lock each bolt with a lock nut.

I drilled the stabilizer hole offset to help balance the bow. This will be cut 1/4" past center.

I'll have my friend weld the cut made to bend the iron. The original bow wasn't welded there but I'll do it cause I'm a bit anal.

Ok got the grinding done and cleaned up the edges. Made a string for it and it appears that it is going to be 59" n to n and looks like the weight is going to come in the upper 40s to low 50s. I'm cutting up the wood for the grip portion now. That may take a while as I have to do it with files and hand sanding. Looks like it's going to weigh around 4 lbs. I can always use it to build up my bow arm.    :biglaugh:

Will be interested in how you do the grip section.
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

Got side tracked by our 15th grandchild  :)  August Finley born 7:57 pm eastern time 7 lbs 11 oz.

But I did get the bow done enough to grab some arrows and shoot a few rounds. Bummed about the sage limbs being such poor performers but I'll make up some lighter arrows and it should work for short range. Its still rough so I'll get it painted black since it's going to be used for a popup blind bow. Haven't had time to get the final draw weight but I'll get that tomorrow.

I've got to get it painted flat black for the popup blind and do some more work on the rest setup but it's something to play with until my sander gets back from the shop and I can finish the short longbow I started. It ended up at only 44 lbs because I cut the low part of the grip pretty deep. The tiller ended up dead even which is surprising to me but I'll take and enjoy not having to mess with it. It's considerably slower than my longbow of the same poundage but it will work for short range blind shooting. I used some scrap red oak for the grip. I'm not messing with the finish on it as this is a beater bow anyway and the black paint will cover it up.
