Off the top of my head, I'd say it's jatoba (Brazilian Cherry).

Just bought it, sanded the wax coating off for the picture. It is a very heavy wood. Thought I might use it in a riser but would like to know something more about it first.

If it was covered in wax, it isn't likely jatoba.

They can Kiln dry Jatoba so there is no need in a complete wax coating. Same goes for Ipe ...and it's definitely not Ipe.

I'll try to take a couple of pics of my boards including end pics. The pieces I have that look similar are pretty heavy, like Verawood.. The wood I bought came from a guy who buys storage lockers and other large auction lots. From looking at the wood, veneer and scrap pieces I think my wood came from a shop that built high end furniture. But I still don't know what wood it is..

Thought the same thing when I saw it.

But ... If it's hard and heavy and you like the look, just decide what to call it and use it! Doesn't really matter what the name is long as it looks good!

I'm with Ben on that score! If it's hard and strong and it looks good, use it!

Been busy today and didn't get a chance to cut off an end to see what it looked like. It's covered with so much wax that I can't tell anything.

Cut a small piece off to see if I could get an idea, I'm more confused now. Looks almost Orange; notice the dust. Even inside feels like it's wax. Two sides have wild grain and the others almost none.

Top to bottom: Rosewood, walnut, Osage, Mystery wood, and cherry. For color comparison.

I'd put Cumaru (Brazilian Teak) into the hat of possibilities.
