toelke whip style bow
« on: August 02, 2015, 02:51:00 PM »
I am about to order materials for my first build, and I like the way the whip looks and I like the reviews I've read about it. anyway, I hope to get some input from whip owners if they can share some insight into how many laminations I should get. I am going to make the bamboo laminations from flooring material and I have a supply of walnut for the innermost lamination. does anyone know what tapers and thicknesses to use for a 55 lb target weight? what size glass? I am going to order black glass for my first build due to cost. I hate to sink a lot of money on a first build. plan on using walnut for the riser also. thanks in advance.

Hi, Mac. I love the Mt Ida area. Lake Ouchita is the most beautiful lake in the state!

I'm afraid I can't help you with your questions but I do have a suggestion if I may. Others will chime in I'm sure.

Have you considered a board bow for your first build? I believe they are simpler and you can gain tons of experience. A board bow can also be very lethal!

Glad to see another Arkansawyer on here!   :archer:

Thought about it, but not really considered it. I shoot a bob lee takedown that I bought on the cheap. Lol. Put it together from 2 different **** auctions. I was at first going to make longbow limbs for it, as a trial run. I think if I order the stuff I am just going to go all in and make the bow of love to buy if I could. Lol. It is good to have someone recognize the lake reference. Ha! I love this area.

The auction site name is censored because they don't pay to advertise on this site.

If I were using walnut for a riser I would use some type of re-enforcement, like an I beam or some glass to beef it up.

Do you have the profile for the bow you want to build so you can build a form?

yeah, I have the pic of the whip that I printed off, divided the length into even increments and made a ruler for the pic, made a tip to tip line, measured off in even increments so that I can graph out the profile. I have it set up so I can transfer the design to a plywood form. the bow will be 62 inches along the contour, I have done research and know that the riser needs to be 1 inch thick between the laminations from back to belly and the length from fade to fade is 21 inches. I also know the finished width at widest on the back of the bow is 1 inch and the limb tips taper straight from fadeouts to tips which are 1/2 inch.

I have the full size drawing of the riser shape drawn out and ready to apply to some material. as far as the limb stack, here is what I know:

from back to belly: clear glass, veneer, bamboo, tapered walnut, bamboo, "heat treated maple" veneer, clear glass.
I have heard that the heat treated maple has a better compression strength than straight maple, and I guess that is why they use it on the belly.
what I don't know yet, is my target limb stack thickness at the fadeouts and limb tips.
any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to keep the cost of the bow down by using as many local woods as I can. I have a possible source of osage that I was thinking of substituting for the heat treated maple. I have some vertical laminated bamboo flooring from a job I did years ago that I was going to use for the limb cores, and I have walnut for the riser and center stripe. Ill have to order the glass and the smooth on.

for strength I thought about taking the walnut riser block and sawing it into strips, swapping each strip end for end and re laminating with smooth on. I have a shop full of tools and a redneck mindset that thinks I can make anything, while at the same time I realize that I definitely don't know everything.  lol. any tips are appreciated:)

If the profile is close to this, I can get you in the ballpark fro stack and taper....

thanks for the link kennym:) I just ordered the black glass for the bow and the smooth on from binghams. using 0.05 on belly and back. My lamination stack will be
glass 0.05
walnut 0.09
bamboo 0.09

thanks for the link kennym:) I just ordered the black glass for the bow and the smooth on from binghams. using 0.05 on belly and back. My lamination stack will be
glass  0.05
walnut 0.09 taper
bamboo 0.09 taper
walnut 0.03 parallel
bamboo 0.09 taper
walnut 0.09 taper
glass  0.05

this makes a total limb thickness of 1/2" and it will taper to 3/8" thick at the limb tips, I think it will work out better for the 1" wide to 1/2" wide limb profile. I don't want the poundage to be over 60 pounds with 55 being the target weight. I may be able to profile the limbs to wider than target and check weight. keep the tips coming:)

as soon as the smooth on gets here ill put together my hot box and work on laminating the riser section. will the walnut work as I have described earlier, sawing it apart and relaminating to basically make a stack of epoxy walnut plywood? or should I put some woven glass in there I beam style as well?

Just got the pattern laid out. Cut out half first and then used it for both sides.  I was going to post some pics but I cant figure out how with the iPhone.

So I made the printed off whip into a scaled drawing to figure the curve of the limbs. Then made half the pattern on a Peice of 1/4" ply, then used this to make both halves of the full size 1/4" ply pattern. Then transferred to 3/4" material twice to make my 1 1/2" thick full length form. I rough cut the form, and next time I'll route out the finished form surface. Fiberglass should be here tomorrow, but I have to work the next 2 days. I'll post more as I go.
