Dropping weight... Tiller check
« on: September 30, 2015, 12:01:00 AM »
Hey Fellas,
Been shooting my newest bow and absolutely love it other than I feel it is a little heavy for me to shoot as accurately as I want to. I have been looking around on the site about trapping the bow to drop hopefully around 5#.

Can someone please explain to me where I would go about doing this? I haven't found where to actually trap the limbs. Do I do it from tip to the fades or do I trap just in the working limb area?

If anyone could explain this to me so that I could get to working on this thing I really would like to hit the woods with it this fall... Here is a picture of the bow that I would like to fix.

Again thanks to the ones who help explain this process to me so that I can make this bow more comfortable.

Justin

I would trap the back.
I would start by taking an 1/8th 'strip' off each back edge. So instead of the limbs cross section being rectangular it would turn in a trapezoid.
Then check your weight.

When the tiller is off at the Factory they sand the glass to weaken the strong limb. Sand both limbs to get the desired weight and tiller. Have you ever seen a bow with one limb trapped??? There's your answer.

It wasn't said to only trap one limb, that would be crazy. And nothing was said about his tiller being off. The full draw picture looks very good to me. I would do what Mike said, trap the back of both limbs from riser to tips.

Another option is to round over the limb edges. If they are already rounded over- block sand the edges back to square and then round them over again.

Agreemon trapping the back. I wouldn't go all the way to the tips with them1/8 but progressively do less, the last 8 inches to the tips.

I've done a number of longbows trapping the front and they worked great. But now after much reading I would go with the back.

So as everyone suggested I'm gonna trap the back of the bow hopefully tomorrow. I may remove the overlays for the riser as well and re do them. I'm so damn picky and I hate one of the glue lines on it. It drives me nuts showing people with that one glue line.

I didn't like that glue line either..  :)
And Mac made a good point about not trapping the limb tips as much. I over looked that.

Looks like you hit it just right. The more important question is, how does it shoot?
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

Thanks John... I'll post some pictures once I finish it up. I'd like to put a handle wrap of beaver tail around the handle but don't want to take away from the hard work to get the riser design perfect at the same time.

Nice bow. You did a great job on that one. I trap the back of a lot of my long bows a little on purpose now and a lot if I need to take off weight. Works great.

But it looks like you're trying to poop and shoot at the same time. If the ceiling is low, you can always do a full draw from one knee and keep your dignity.

HAHAHAHAHA I never thought of how my picture looks... thanks for the compliments Dave. I am really proud of the work that I have put into this bow and feel that I have stepped my game up on this one. I am excited to put the finishing touches on it starting tomorrow.
