need advise on a mild r/d longbow
« on: January 24, 2016, 07:10:00 PM »
Thinking of building a mild R/D D-shap longbow. Just wanting to know if anyone has any advise on riser length and lam thickness. I'm thinking 62"-64". I draw 27 inches.Any help would be much appreciated

Here's a couple pics of mild r/d design that I build.

I built them 62", 18" riser, 1 1/4" width at fades tapering to 1/2" at nocks.
From back to belly:
0.050 glass
0.100 lamination - 0.002 taper
0.090 lamination - 0.002 taper
0.060 lamination - parallel
0.060 lamination - parallel
0.050 glass
Total stack = 0.410
This gives me a ~50# bow at 28" of draw length.

What weight are you looking to hit?

thanks for the info. I'm looking to hit 55lb-60lb at my draw length. I like the amount reflex you have in that bow. What is it like 2 to 3 inches?

I guess it's about 2 - 3 inches.  I guess I never measured it.  My form was actually built by someone else who was selling off his bow making stuff.

With my design, I'd need about 0.440 total stack to get 55 - 60 # at 27".

Here's the specs on the way I build mine:

62" bow, top limb is 1 1/2" longer than bottom, riser is 16", 4 lam stack - and I really like all lams being .002 taper, 1 1/8" wide at fades down to 9/16" at tips.

With these specs I'll run a total stack of about .490 at the fade and end up with a bow that finishes out around 60 pounds at 28".  I also trap to the belly so if you don't trap the bow I'd reduce my stack some to drop weight.

Tradhunter325 - here is a pic of two recent bows I made off the mild R/D Bingham form design. On their site they have a draw weight chart that is very accurate.

I order my lams from Troy Breeding who is here on Tradgang great resource.

Where in California are you located?

I'm located in Nipomo, it's on the central coast. Is the bingham projects bow a D-shape when it is braced?

I took the bingham R/D and added about 2 more inches of reflex.  My specs are:

53#
17.5" riser
.003 taper per inch
.400 total stack thickness, consisting of .040 front and back glass, boo core, 1 strip of bears paw core glass.

This is what I was thinking. I have a the 68" R/D longbow press plans. Should I get the the bingham's mild R/D longbow. The stack combo I'm thinking of is, 62"longbow #50-60
18"-17" riser
0.050 glass
0.030 cane bamboo
0.090 0.002 taper
0.080 0.002 taper
0.110 parallel
0.030 cane bamboo
0.050 glass

If you go the Bingham's route (which is a good route to go), you can get their limb kit and follow their plans and you will hit your intended draw weight.  Their limb kits have the right thickness for your desired draw weight.  Just take measurements of all of them for your records before you glue it up.

Ok thanks for the advise. I'll contact Bingham and talk to them about what I'm looking for.

Awesome finally someone relatively close to where I am. I am in Clovis inland a bit from you. I spend a fair amount of time down your way surfing.

Here is a pic of the bingham 62" R/D hybrid strung profile. It is not a true D shape.

I've made all of one Bingham's bow; the 62" hybrid.  It's a joy to shoot.  No stacking with very little hand shock and I love that profile.
X 2 what Wolftrail said.   :)
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.
