Done with rattle cans
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:39:00 PM »
I finally got around to buying a gravity feed air gun to do my finishing.  Now I'm kicking myself I didn't get one sooner.  It probably would have saved me a bunch of money.  This thing is great.  Easy to figure out too.

I got a Central Pneumatic 47016 HVLP,  I got that one because I could use water based spar urethane, or any other thing I choose, incase I ever decide to give t-bird or fuller plast a try.  The pattern can be adjusted a lot as well.  It's a $25 or so set up but that's what 3 rattle cans of what I've been using costs, and the finish I'm using Varythane, spar urethane, works good with it and that sets up solid on any type of wood.

"Required air supply: 1-3 HP compressor . Required air pressure: 50-70 PSI . Air consumption: 6 CFM . Output: 200-300 CCS per minute. Nozzle size: 1.5Mm . Cup capacity: 20 oz . Air inlet: 1/4"-18 NPS".

50-70 PSI    :scared:

I've been thinking a lot about doing the same thing Mike. I have the compressor already. I pay $7-9 a can now. That's only 2-3 bows, not many!

I have been using Krystal for several years now and it works well.  What brand of varethane and spar urethane are you using and where are you getting it?  I am always looking for something better or easier.

Jess, the brand is Varethane and the product is spar urethane.  It comes in gloss, semi gloss, and satin, in interior and outdoor, it's waterbased and doesn't need to be thinned before spraying. It sets up on any wood, cocobolo, rosewood, you name it. I use the outdoor satin finish.

I use Minwax Helmsman in clear satin. It's a green and back can. It will be dry in 2 hours if its not too cool. I like 4-5 coats. Quite an attractive and durable finish out of a rattle can.

X2

I have been using minwax helmsman spar urethane satin for a few years. I put a few coats of massey finish on first, then once it's cured, a few of the spar urethane. It has been real durable for me, and looks great imo.

I've had no problems with it curing over bubinga, not sure how it would do with actual rosewoods

Seal oily wood with shellac first.

Shellac is fine, but I seal a lot of ipe and have had no problems spraying right over it. Just did this weekend as a matter of fact.

As a follow up. I have tried several other aerosols, none dry on oily wood like Helmsman does without a base coat of shellac or super glue.

I used to use Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane, with out sealing it doesn't dry over Cocobolo or Santos Rosewood. My first glass backed bow had cocobolo veneers and the Minwax was very tacky on the limb edges 8 days after spraying the bow..I sanded it down sealed edges with super glue and refinished it with no problems. I did a touch up on a bow with a Santos Rosewood overlay..same problem so I sanded, superglued, refinished with spar, no problems.. Last year I bought 2 mini HVLP guns, I now use the Finex FX1000 mini HVLP with a 1.4mm tip. I am currently spraying Krystal Dull or Gloss, no need to seal oily woods with Krystal.

I used to use superglue to seal cocobolo and the like, back in my Tru-oil days.  But for the last few years I've chose to just use something that cures without sealing it first.

Mike, Try Fullerplast, don't think you'll regret it. Dries on anything, builds up real well and you can spray repeated coats within minutes of applying.
