Red Oak Boardbow unbacked (pic heavy)
« on: February 11, 2016, 09:30:00 PM »
A bow for a friend. Specs: 1.75 at the fades strait taper to just under.5 at the tips.  Pretty flat belly with rounded edges. Stiff in the handle. Keawe wood tip overlays.
I have put about 80 arrows through it so far. It measures between 44 and 48 lbs at 28in. 62in nock to nock.  It has taken some set and I am assuming that is a design flaw. But it shoots very well and without the hand shock of my other self bows/board bows. I am loving this thing.  The finish is Vinegaroon dye/stain with spar-urethane over it.

And the Money Shot. (had to take a still from a video hence the poor quality photo.)

Looks good!  Tiller looks great and your stain job does too.

Overall very nice. Honestly I'm surprised you were able to make that much weight, at that length, draw length, and on only 1.75" wide. A nice tiller obviously helped out.

Bet it shoots nice.

Nice, and, FWIW, I don't think that is much set for oak.

I agree, for a 62" red oak that is very little set, great job!

Made a couple of red oak board bows, both 68" ntn

One has about 2" of set the other about 1".

Had a go at a recurve using steam-bent red oak for limbs.

It failed - I'm sure it was a bad glue up - it's on a previous post.

Used the old vinegar/steel wool on it. Love the effect.

The surviving limb and riser...

Thanks everyone.  It is a fun shooter!  Roy said its Very Nice, and I have seen what he guesses is ok. So i must be on the right track with this bow building stuff hahaha. You guys are awesome.   You will have to forgive my ignorance about the set, I have not made many bows, but its a great time!

That's a great looking bow! I'm impressed that you have that little set for the draw weight at that short of an overall length. Really pretty overall. Was that board quartersawn?

Baitfish, It was quartersawn. It was one of the best boards I have ever found at a hardware store. I will be looking for another in the next few days.

Wolftrail, thanks for the tip tip!  I will try to shave them down a bit.  I just put rice vinegar and double ought steel wool in a mason jar and let it sit in the sun for a day. It woks really well, Dies leather jet black too!
