Bow building opinions
« on: February 21, 2016, 01:55:00 PM »
Hello all, I'm a long time reader of trad gang. I have learned a lot about bow building from all the knowledgable people who are members here and greatly appreciate the fact they are willing to share all their useful information.
I decided to join today, so keep in mind I am new to this. I have been building bows for some time now and I'm looking for opinions. I build R/D longbows, primarily 60"-64". I have never owned nor shot anything other than my own. I perform draw force curves on all bows I build.
How fast should a R/D longbow shoot? How can I post a picture of my bow and a draw force curve chart on here to get some opinions?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.    [email protected]

Welcome!  You need to join an image sharing site like Photobucket or Imgur to post pictures on here as far as I know.  You'll probably get more specific info on your bow speed question if you give more info on the type of material you make your bows from.  I've seen R/D profile bows made as wooden selfbows, all wood lam bows, and fiberglass bows.  Which kind do you make?
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Welcome, Kenny. You'll find a bunch of great folks here. We're glad to have ya.

I make d/r longbows too, though I have never done a FDC chart of one.

Pictures here are kind of a pain. They have to be linked through a hosting site like Photobucket.

In order to post a picture, you have to click down below on where it says "Post Reply", which opens more options than is available in the "Quick Reply" dialog box. Then click on the "Image" tab, and enter the URL of the picture that is offered by your host site. Photobucket is what I use. I hope that helps ya some. Give it a try. Let's see a bow you made!

I'm not certain that this picture uploaded. Will take me a while to get the hang of this.
The bow I tried to post a picture of has (2) 0.001 per Inch tapered bamboo core covered with splatled/curly maple veneers. The handle is figured walnut. I will add that 100% of the wood is cut by me as well as grinding my parallels and tapers. It's wrapped with 0.040" Gordon's glass front and back. This particular bow is 60" 42 @ 29". Testing with finger release (2 under 1over) with a 455 grain (total weight) I shoot 160 FPS. Speed is not important to me but good arrow flight is. I haven't seen much testing to see how my creations compare to others.

I have been using imgur.com

Photobucket can be a pain sometimes, so far imgur has been pretty good.

If you get this far
left click the IMG number and when it's blue right click and click copy.

then right click on trad gang (your post) click paste

Nice bow man! Wicked curves, would love to see strung and full draw!

If you do smmething in imgur like click on the small pics, it drops down a screen that lets you post to message boards without showing a link, just shows the pic.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I'm still having trouble trying what you suggested posting the picture instead of the link.

In the full draw picture, I notice the tiller looks off on the upper limb. Small stiff spot.
When timing the limbs I really take my time. Perfectly timed limbs seem to me to be extremely smooth on the release with no hand shock. But this particular bow still shows a stiff spot. Drives me crazy but I hate to go further with it due to how quiet and smooth it is!

Nice bow

Did you put the two tapers on the face side?

I just tried out tineypic and found it to be easier than photobucket.  Ironically, it seems to be owned by photobucket!

I went back to imgur, signed in and it showed about 9 small pics. I clicked on one and it made it big and by itself. On the right side was 6 choices to share, I clicked on message board and it highlited, then copied it and here we go.

Fill draw looks good from here!

Photobucket does the same thing, and I never have problems with it. I click on a small picture and it gets bigger, then over to the right are the options and I just click the bottom img link and it's copied. Then if ya wanna scroll through more pictures, just click the arrow on the left or right of the big picture and it goes to the next picture and the options still stay on the right side. Simple...

This bow has, 0.070 taper on the belly and 0.090 on the back. So far this has been the combo that's offered my design the best cast as well as speed. I've experimented with tip wedges (which I like) and also 0.015 carbon towards the belly side of the stack.

Really like that riser and those sweet curves.  Nice work!
I mostly make wooden bows and am always happy with the rare one that is an overachiever speed wise.  But, getting good arrow flight is the main goal for me, too.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Thanks!!! The wood for the riser came from a walnut that uprooted In my mothers yard. My trouble is every bow I make I fall in love with and hate to let it go!
As for the picture uploads. I'm doing this via Mobile phone. I can click on a small picture, it gets big. Then I click again and it give that little arrow at the bottom. As for share options I have mail, Facebook, and message. Do not see a message board. I'm computer illiterate!

And nothing beats the sight of that arrow like a dart through the air. I love it.
