partial refinish
« on: April 02, 2016, 02:54:00 PM »
I have a Big Jim Buffalo that at one time had a beaver tail grip. The grip has been removed and the riser wood that is now exposed appears not to have been completely finished or maybe has worn off. I would like to add a finish coat to this portion of the bow only. Any advise on what product I should use?
Thanks.  Steve

Is the rest of the bow's finish fine? If it had any scratches, chips, or anything, I'd respray the whole thing with the same thing Big Jim used, T-bird?

If that was the only spot that you wanted to seal, and it was under the handle leather, you could use whatever you like.

The rest of the bow is fine. I do not plan to put a new grip on the bow. Hopefully, I can blend the new finish with the old.

Feather down the edges of the finish so that you can run your finger over it and not feel a ridge.  Then blow it off, wipe it with alcohol or acetone, and spray it with finish.  After it cures well, you can sand it smooth again with 1000 grit and apply another coat or two of finish. The finish repair should be invisible but the wood may have bleached out a bit where sunlight hit it.
