Splicing glass
« on: April 28, 2016, 02:53:00 PM »
Hey guys, new to the forum.  Thanks for the add.

I'm in the planning stages of a glass R/D.

My problem is, I'm kind of a knuckle dragger.  (True 32" draw.)  I want to build a 74" bow with solid glass on the back.

Does anyone know where I can get a piece of glass that that's around 76 inches?  All I can find are 72" lengths, or a 328 ft spool from Bearpaw, but I didn't want to spend $600.

Thanks for the help.

Are you wanting a flat/straight bow or a recurve?

Personally, I'd build a 72" bow.  You can no doubt get a true 32" draw from a 72" design without horrible stacking.  There really is nothing longer than 72" in fiberglass except for the spool.

Thanks,

I guess I should also pose the second half of the question and hence the title of the post subject.  Is it possible to splice sections of glass together, or does that create a weak spot?

This would be on the back of the bow, possibly even under an overlay on the back of the handle.

Also, forgot to mention, it's a longbow.

Under the overlay(s) in the middle of the back of the riser should be just fine.
The best made plan won't get it made the way you planned.

Yes you could but there is no problem making a 32 inch draw bow from 72 inch strips. If you make a bow too long for it's intended drawlength you will get a slow/innefficent bow.

You could do something like a take down with longer than average limbs to get that length, but I agree with Ken about just making a 72" bow.

If your buying tapers they usually come in 36 inch lengths..then you will lose an inch making the scarf joints.. I would think a 70" bow would still work for a 32" draw? I built a 66" D/R for a guy who pulled 30.5", I think it could be pulled to 32 before string angle hit close to 90 degrees

Someone out there should have a spool of Bearpaw glass and could sell you what you need.
