New bow for PA Bow Trade
« on: June 05, 2016, 05:54:00 PM »
I built this selfbow for the First Annual PA Invitational Bow Trade. She is 63"t/t, 53#@26", snake skin backing, water buff horn tip overlays, hemp handle wrap with a floppy rest.
This stave gave me lots of problems. It had a dogleg in what is the upper limb and some reflex. After many heatings I got the dogleg mostly out and evened up the reflex. The bottom limb would not take any reflex after 3 tries so I left it as it was.
It's been over a year since my last bow. I'm glad the guys talked me into getting in this trade. Here are a few pics...

Great looking bow Pat. Those tips are really nice.  What type of snake is it?

Thanks guys. She shoots well and quiet as a whisper. She should make a good hunting bow for the recipient.
Dan, I was told it is a black rat snake. I purposefully drew the tips pretty narrow, almost Molle style.

Great looking bow!

That's a beautiful bow!  I'm always amazed at the work done by yourself and other self bow maker's.

What is the handle wrap?

Thanks Monterey. The handle wrap is hemp cord from Wal-Mart. Once it is wrapped on the handle area I saturate it with Massey finish; 2ton epoxy thinned to a watery consistency with acetone. Once it sets it is completely weather proof and gives your hand a good purchase on the bow. I've used this kind of handle wrap for quite a few years now.

Great job on the trade bow Pat.  That's definitely a black rat snake skin on it.
