HELP HELP HELP All Finished
« on: November 17, 2016, 02:12:00 PM »
Fiber glass bow
One of my washer held up the glass on the back of the bow 9" from the nock.

I could probably dig some of that out, not much
I want to put it back on the form (the belly is on the form, the hose is on the back of the bow) and use a piece of wood 3/16" thick and clamp it down on the hump and use a heat gun. ?????

LOL. Just fix it. Grind it out with a dremel tool and finesse it back down. What else can you do??  I can't leave you alone for one day without ya messing something up..  :)

Most of it will go once you profile the limbs won't it?

It appears that the joint between the two wood lams was affected too. It depends on how much of the width of the limb is affected. I'd mark out the limb profile on the limb and see if I could adjust the profile to take out as much as possible then see how bad or good it looked. You've got nothing to lose and some bow building experience to gain. Also you should always loosen and move the washers away from your limb after adding air pressure to prevent this from happening but I'm sure you've figured that out.

I like the h eat idea, but be very careful with the heat gun, it can kill yer glass.

Can you grind it within a bit of profile and put the hose and all back on, then back on oven? I've reheated lammed risers when I glued up one pc bows with no probs but never reheated limbs.

Grinding to profile mi h t be a risk if you think it might slide too....

Here's hoping that will mostly be reduced when you profile that part of your limb..

I'd be hesitant to put a heat gun on that glass.

I'd lay the pattern on that limb, cut/grind it, shape it, smooth it, and see if it disappears. it may. If not, I'd scrap it and start over. I wouldn't piss around with a dremel in there or a heat gun... but that's just me.

The limb is at width
when I saw it I thickness sanded all on that side.

The limb is 1.4 wide and the hump goes 1/4" across the limb.
I think the heat gun is my only option. has anybody tried the heat gun?
I can gouge out very little
The cores have just a little more glue between them on that side.

I cooked it at 180
If I put it back on the form and a piece of wood over the hump, inflate the hose and cook it at a higher temp.
will that work?

I am with Bowjunkie, it isn't worth having it blow up in your face.  I would never feel comfortable shooting it and could probably never develop any trust in it.  That being said you might be able to warm some smooth on up until it get real watery and wick it in and clamp it down.

Mark, that is what I would try, but not sure about the pc of wood.

I wouldn't let anybody else have it or shoot it....

Doesn't seem like there is a whole lot you can do but to chalk it up to experience...  Happened to me to...  Finish up the bow and call her a loaner... And warn the person to shoot at own risk...  It will probably be ok  if it is lighter weight bow...

Heat won't soften the glue without ruining the glass. Remember that the glass is just a bunch of fibers held together by glue.....
Personal shooter only. I would get some nocks cut in, finish the profile then pull the heck out of it on the tiller board.

Yep. Chop it up. Start another right away. It'll only bother ya for a minute or two. Consider it another lesson learned.

Don't do that... If you are thinking to trash it and if it is under 40#..., send it to me with a few details on how you would finish it...  I'll give $40 plus shipping...   Or I'll trade you for some materials... Riser wood or glass...  I make my own glass and have some cool colors and I have plenty of Sheoak...

This is a Binghams 60" 1 piece recurve.
I made it 1-1/2" wide with a .260 stack, shooting for 35# or less, It came out 40#.

I got most of the glue joint tighter, narrowed the tips and put a string on it, all seems good.
no limb twist     :)

Glued on the under riser part.
