New to me bandsaw coming tomorrow!
« on: January 07, 2017, 06:10:00 PM »
Got a used 17" Grizzly G0513X2 on the way. Delivery tomorrow.

I'm ridiculously excited. Got a mobile base, and a 1" resaw king blade in addition to the factory blade.

Quickly tuned it up at the guys place to make a test cut and I finally understood what 2hp means. It was sweet. Staves don't mess with me anymore!!!

Been searching for a deal on a nice saw for a while and was almost about to pull the trigger on a new 14" G0555lx. With shipping, riser block, and mobile base it would have worked out to the same price a small the used 17".

once I run out of stuff to cut I will report back.

You're going to love it! Wait till you do some re-sawing, you'll be looking for stuff to cut up with it.    :)

My 14" does a real nice job of resawing.

Nice find

Barely had time today to get this thing to my house and into the garage. It's not set up yet .... actually I don't even have enough power yet to run this beast, but I needed some motivation to get moving on my garage to shop conversion anyway.

Here she is next to a 6ft ladder for size. I've never owned a machine of such scale so I'm still a little shocked.

That's a beast.  You could saw that ladder up in pieces with that saw.  Congratulations on the new toy.

Thanks guys. Yeah this thing is a beast. Ironically, this 17" saw is a lot more practical for me than a 14" because the table height is quite a bit lower lol.

It's been a long time coming. I started building bows with an oak board clamped to an old dresser, built many on my apartment balcony, and finally have the space to own some real tools.

The garage needs a major overhaul to turn into a nice shop.

I'm thinking I may do a shop build along as I go through the process. I'm sure it's going to take me the better part of the spring, if not longer, but maybe showing the process will inspire some other people to take the plunge.

Rough plan so far:
Rip up blacktop floor .... yes it's blacktop ... stupid I know.
Assess condition of and repair concrete slab.
Replace 2 existing windows and add more windows, not sure how many yet.
Add 60-100 amp electrical sub panel, and bring in wired internet connection.
Wire shop for 110 and 220 and lots of lighting.
Insulate walls and ceiling.
Sheetrock.
And finally, move everything from current basement shop to garage.

ahh! you should be none by next week.
not worthwhile just pouring a 2" floor on top of the blacktop?

Ben, check out copies of Fine Woodworking Magazine's Tools and shops issues. They publish one at the end of each year. Lots of insight and ideas on building or converting wood shops. If you don't mind a suggestion, instead of tearing up the floor, you might lay down a grid of 1X2's, insulate between them with Styrofoam panels and lay a plywood floor on top.
Nice bandsaw BTW, it looks brand new.
Dave.

Dave I will definately check that out.

My concern with the floor is actually not related to the floor per-se. The problem is they put blacktop over the original concrete slab, so now the blacktop comes to the top of the sill plate, and portions of the sill plate are staying moist and deteriorating. I don't wanna do a bunch of work to find out I need to pull everything down to do repairs to the structure of the garage. So I need to do that up front.

Nothing more fun than fixing other people's mistakes,

I know how you feel. We've been looking for a new house and my least favorite words to hear are " I'm a handy person!" If I can find a piece of land that I can afford, I'll build and not have to worry about finding other people's messes.
