Finally took some time and got into the shop today.
Have barely had time to use the new saw, so I figured I would start on a nice, but rather gnarly yew stave I had sitting for several years.
Got it roughed out, floor tillering, pushed a little too hard I guess and it exploded right at the roughed out fade ... lesson learned. Round everything over before bending.
Seems obvious now. I've always done things by hand so this whole saw marks/sharp edges thing is new to me.
Like they say, the fastest way to ruin a bow is with power tools.
Took a few deep breaths and starting working on a nice ERC stave that I intend to steam into a deflex recurve shape and sinew back.
Also got a nice rosewood riser cut out and sanded for a tri-lam I'm planning. Going to be an 18" riser, nice tall sight window, probably 64" recurve, hickory back, ipe belly, undecided core. Really looking forward to that one. I've been building all my risers 12" and that really is like the bare minimum so 18" should be nice.
