What's this white wood?
« on: April 18, 2017, 06:02:00 PM »
I've dropped this tree since it's encroaching on our leach field. It is more of a weed though. There are two others left and I wish I could take them down too. This tree produces BB sized berries in the fall that the Robin's eat and redeposit in the spring. So they come up all over like Chinese elm. Seems heavy and hard so don't know if it would work for bow wood. Any ideas on what it is? It's nothing I'm familiar with.

Looks like hackberry to me.  It's a good bow wood.  Steam bends very well.

Yep, looks like hackberry. There are a couple of species - not sure what you have.  One of the best white woods for making bows IMO.

I have also purchased "sugarberry" (one of the hackberry species) lams from Troy at the wood gallery that worked well in glass bows.

Better save some!

Yeah that's hackberry/sugarberry.  Don't park your car under one in the summer.  They mist a sap that's hell to clean off.  Had a big one in my front yard at my previous house.
