Veneer over carbon?
« on: May 23, 2017, 08:44:00 AM »
Hey guys, it's been along time since I posted anything here mostly because business is taking me Away from building.  Which is good and bad in a way. I've been curious about tinkering with carbon and one of the things that I had heard in the past was that Carbon did not take dings  so well and that it could compromise it's durability. I don't know where I heard that let's just say they said so. You know what 'they' say. Plus the fact that if you wanted to use some pretty veneers the carbon muted their appearance. Has anyone ever take in the veneers and just glue them on the outside of the carbon? We are talking very very thin stuff. But it would be thick enough to give some resistance to trauma in case your bow limb  tapped your Treestand for example, plus put the pretty on the outside of the limb where everyone can see.

Call me a dumbass for asking, I am just curious.

Dave

I think some of the Habu bows have veneer over the carbon? One of my friends had one and I'm pretty sure that is what I saw.. EDIT..my friends bow had the veneer as the outer layer over the carbon, no clear fiberglass.

Widow's PL longbows carry a veneer and glass over carbon. Very nice, quick shooting design.

Have to put glass over the veneer. Not sure if the carbon would be of much benefit then. I have heard some grind the glass very thin first.

Habu is the only builder that I know of that put wood over the carbon with no glass at all. I have tried it and the wood always cracked off. I suspect that Chris cooked epoxy on the outside of the wood but I have never tried that as of yet. Most builders put clear glass on the back veneer next and then carbon. Trouble with that is that the carbon has virtually no effective working value other than the slight difference in weight between wood and carbon when it is done this way. The thickest and heaviest thing I currently put on carbon is snakeskin.

God bless, Steve

I put a .030 wood veneer over .040 black glass and it didn't hold up at all. Pulled apart where the limbs flexed the most.

My wifes bow has bare wood veneers over carbon and yes the wood wants to lift. Gino used to do it but he ground the clear glass down to about .015" and put it over the veneer.
She said " did you see that?" He said "Of course!!!" She said " Why did you step in it then?"
