2 piece takedown D/R build - finished pics pg.3
« on: June 22, 2017, 03:27:00 AM »
Hi guys,
did a glue up yesterday night on my 4th bow. It will be 2 piece takedown, bocote/wenge riser with white fiberglass and padouk accent stripes and B&W ebony veneers and bamboo cores. It wiill be my first where I ground all the lams myself. Riser has 1/4 inch black G10 fiberglass I beam.

Dry run

fades looking good

ready for glue up

all covered with smooth on

in the oven

this morning - glue lines looking good

what kind of wood is that form made of?

Sound's like it's going to be a Looker.

I'd hate to cut that in half!

It is made od water resistant plywood. Yeah it scares the hell out of me to cut it in half. But I will do it anyway. It will be the socket system that Big Jim uses. I Hope it will be a looker, bu I'm bit afraid how clear is the fiberglass going to be. It is made by Bearpaw, but I have it for a while so I'm not sure if it is the new one that Is supposed to ve wery good.

Hi Matiass, stack is: 2x 0.060" parallel veneer, 0.095" 0.002 taper,  0.060" 0.001 taper, 2x0.040" fiberglass for total stack of 0.355" shooting for 64" 45# draw weight. It Is Kennym design.

Looks good. I have done a few of the take downs like you plan here. You will want at least .250 riser overlay on the front of the bow. This should be enough to keep from going through the glass when you relieve material for the glass wrap.

Another tip to is when you wrap go right up to where your shelf will be on the part with a couple of layers that is not relieved. This will give a good transition when you shape the grip.

Thank you very much for the tips. I have a question, do you think it will be OK to use good quality CA glue for overlay, or should I use smooth on. I nedd to finish it in few days before I go for vacation (I need to take it with me, this bow is for a friend), so I dont want to wait fo the smooth on to cure.

Smooth on for sure on the riser overlays. I use CA on tip overlays.

Thank guys. Done some more work on it yesterday.
Clamped up

First layer of glass and then carbon

This morning

I have to add some more fiberglass on the bottom of the handle. I couldn't finish it in one go, because my epoxy started to set on me, it was over 89°F.

Added more fiberglass, should be enough now. Tomorrow I will see if it comes apart. Fingers crossed.
