First Hazelnut bow finished!!
« on: March 09, 2008, 04:56:00 PM »
After seeing Gordon's fantastic Hazelnut build-along I was inspired to print off his directions and see what I cold do.
It is also convenient to have him live close so he could give me a few pointers and double-check the tiller (asymetrical limbs really mess with my eyes).  The bow was built from a nice hazelnut stave I cut last summer.  It was heat treated twice, silk backed with diamond back skins, and sealed with 10 coats of true-oil.  It is 60# at 28" and is my second fully completed bow.  It was invaluable to have Gordons step-by-step instructions from the build-along.  I tried many new thing on this bow and I'm pleased with how it turned out.  I will post full draw pics when I have someone to take them.
Thanks for looking,
Bryan

Where do you find hazelnut trees that big?

Beautiful arc you have there!

Killdeer, (using your formal name because we've never met       :) ),

Western Oregon grows some big trees of all sorts. I saw lots of  Hazelnut big enough to make a bow when I live  out  there.

Here  in Maine,  thumb  size is  pretty big.

Thanks for all the nice compliments.

Blacktail- It shoots like a dream.  It's a few pounds heaver than I hunted last year, and it really packs a punch.  I'm not sure if I was focusing more on not, but my shot placement was better than ever.

Killdeer- I harvested a few sucker-staves that are 6-7" across.  Most orchards are trimmed heavily so there are only arrow shoots.  I managed to find an orchard that hadn't been managed for 8-10 years.  I think I ended up with several dozen staves.

Lucas from Saluki was here this summer and commented on the hazelnut trees here in the back yard. That was the first time I'd heard of hazelnut being used for a bow. I knew that the sprouts made good arrows and atlatle darts but not bows.

Well, a while back I decided to cut all of the crooked stuff and let the straight stuff grow. Then I'll have hazelnut, osage, and hickory for bows, and Japanese arrow bamboo, and hazelnut sprouts for arrows....all in the back yard. Ain't life great.

Good looking bow Bryan. I hope to have one like in a year or so.
