Well the last couple days got the bow glued, limbs cut out,, got them darn near totally profiled/evened, started tillering and so far looks good. I will run to "Footed Shaft" tommorow...hopefully open. Then get rest done. My first laminate bow and only second bow. Thanks to Kenny for lending me his ear and expertise from time to time as well as selling me the stack.

Finally broke down and built a Flemish string jig. I figure while continuing my self bow endeavors I’ll always need new  strings. A good many string making tutorials are ok but some poor concerning explanations. Does the center row (adjustable) represent bow or string length?

I struggled for years with getting my string lengths right, to the point of I was ready to use my jig for fire fodder. Then I watched the video from Bodnik, the young lady does a stellar job in explaining every step in detail.

What I do is measure my bows length, "string groove to string groove", and through practice making strings, I changed those

numbers to coincide with the holes down the middle and what I measured on the bow grooves.

Not everyone twists up strings the same tightness, just the way we are.

So if I were you Howard, I would measure the bow from groove to groove and make a couple strings.

See if they are too long or too short for your bow.

Then adjust your post longer or shorter and make another string.

It will take a while but you will get the hang of it.

ANOTHER BIGGIE IS...

After you form your first loop and before you form your second loop.

Place the first loop over a post of some sort and stretch the string out snug.

Seperate the two bundles a couple inches and you will notice the strands are twisted a little bit.

That comes from forming the first loop.

Now hold both of those strands, but do back twists in one of them at a time.

After a few twists look at the strands and see if they are laying fairly straight, if not do more twists till they are straight.

Shouldn't take more than 5 or 6 twists to get them straight.

Then keep twisting in the same direction as you were and do 20 more twists.

If you don't do this, your string will end up looking like a bull rope.

When done and on the bow, you want the string to look like a nice round pipe.

Hope that makes sense.

Watch that video and apply it.

If ya have any questions just ask us or pm me.

It will take you a few strings and trial and error but it's not hard at all.

About to put together a recurve limb, Bjørn glass, Zebrano lams, Stabil-kore and Bloodwood wedge. The Bjørn glass comes sanded on both sides and have always been very clear, but you do not see the final result before the finish is on.
