I have some ol Damon Howatt Bows that are ground that way. One is a true static recurve.

I don't trust my own tapers but that's way out of my league!

The Thunderstick MOAB is ground that way and I have a sled for a Jack Howard lam that someone had me make for them that is built like that.

I have a superlam that I use that is an .001 taper wih power lam and tip wedges built in. Changes the way things bend in the limb. Trying for better string angle on my 58" and found it works well in other bows also.

I am going to have to quit reading this stuff, it makes me want to try them out when I haven't successfully learned the simpler ways yet.

Started work on a hickory self bow for a guy.  Someone had made it for him, but he hasn't shot it because it's too heavy for him.  I'm taking some weight off to get it a little more manageable for him.  It's 60" long and looks pretty nice other than this.  The bottom limb has a pretty good twist to it.  Can you guys tell if it's something I can steam out?  It looks to me like it was cut out of line.  It is enough that it causes the bow to twist in the hand while drawing.  I'm gonna try to tiller out what I can, but other than that, what do you guys suggest?

yeah you can fix that. I would use dry heat instead of steam. I had one like that. used a picnic table and turned it on its side with the "hump" up and put a brick under the tip and one under the handle. oiled the spot where the hump started. heated it up with a hit gun and used a bar clamp to pull it down. problem is hicory can be stubborn. had to do it many times and even then it didnt stay perfect

It just looks so far out I wasn't sure.  When I lay a straight edge on the bow it looks like that limb was cut out of line.  How do you suppose I pull it down without crushing the edge of the limb, or putting a twist in it?

I tested out my new log loading trailer today.  I cut a good size osage tree to try it out on.  I found out real quick that the 2000 lb winch that someone gave me was not strong enough to work.  I was pretty disappointed.  I left the logs in the field for now.  I'm ordering at least a 4000 lb winch.  

 


At least the day wasn't a total failure.  This is the first tree that I have pulled out with my new to me UTV.  I got one straight 90" long section and one crooked log.  I'll try to get some deflex and some reflex staves out of it.  They will be fun to play around with and see what I can make from them.  This tree had the top snapped off years ago from some freak hurricane winds.

I'm only hauling them a quarter mile to my splitting stand Roy.  I don't split logs on the ground any more.  That's rough on the back.

I'm trying to take care of my back Roy.  I used to load logs this size and bigger in the bed of my truck by myself.  That wasn't very fun or smart.  If I can get this trailer to work I'll be able to drag, load, unload, and split logs on my elevated stand without ever lifting them by hand.  

Congrats on nearing 70.  I'm closing in on 40.

Dang Roy, that's a fine pile of osage you got there, but one of them has a pretty wild looking growth.


Since I am still in that uncertain stage about my lams and hesitating the glue up, I decided to make some veneers from a bit of the spalted maple I have setting back. I think I am going to like them.

Those look good Skeater.  Are you going to stabilize them before lay up?

I got a chunk of myrtle from Gary Schuler (thanks for the lead Kenny) and it's a nice looking piece of wood.  Should get a couple risers out of this.

My first experience with myrle.  My swap bow is going to be an old school hill style with back set.  I'm at a loss for what color glass to use.  I'm thinking that bamboo cores would be appropriate.
