Yep. Tree was kind of a tangled mess from the landowner digging it out with the backhoe. These were taken from the smaller limbs I could access.
Base of the tree is about 2’ diameter and splits into 3 trunks. Root ball is still attached. Scares me a little cutting on trees like that. You just can’t tell what it’s gonna do when cut.

And a Stihl is like a sore you know what.......ya can’t beat it :goldtooth:

I used to make endless loop strings years ago.

You beat me to it Brad, but I've been doing some light brush trimming, so it was an easy fix, only clogged the air cleaner a little....

Now I'm all man, well thats what i tell the kids- wife wont listen anymore :smileystooges:

But, i drive a Mansized Ford, and run a Stihl.

feeling sorry for the Husky girls on here, so i thought i would bolster their cause a bit  :biglaugh:

Here's, Dan our faller, dealing with a little 7' Sitka blowdown.

The Husky has a 5' bar on it.

Dan had to buck the rootwad off, ( what he calls, disconnecting the tree) then he bucked it into rounds for processing.

Dan is the most phenomenal faller I have seen, and we have a lot of "big wood" fallers up here.

I guess when a man is held in the highest regard and revered amongst his fellow fallers, then he is certainly top drawer.

I deal with a fair amount of sizable wood up here, but i would never touch things like this, Dan makes it look so easy.

Problem with blowdowns of this size, is that they take a lot of other trees with them, and everything is preloaded, and just waiting to snap on you, like a loaded rat trap.

Yellowwood-Not sure how your jig works. But you need to be able to pull all strands EQUALLY tight. If some strands are looser than others, the string will be noisy. I had this problem in the beginnng. I was pulling each strand too tight, and by the time I finished my last pass the first strands would be loose. I learned to make each strand just snug, then pull them all tight together before wrapping the serving.

Fujmo- Timber cutters have all my respect. I’ve been thru numerous chainsaw and felling classes. And that doesn’t bother me a bit. But dealing with blowdowns with the rootball attached is a whole different creature. The main trunk of the Osage I was cutting on was about 5’ off the ground because of the rootball. Hard to tell which way the tree would spring or roll when cut apart. I decided a trip to the ER wasn’t worth a little bit of bow wood.

yup, wise move Bvas. :)
I have seen dan cut the loaded wood around the blowdown, they look like toothpics, but may be 18" diameter, and seen them flick across the forest like BBQ skewers.
you really have to know your stuff.
This guy Dan, who works for us, used to be on danger tree patrol (with his falling partner) for years, for the local logging companies- dealing with trees other fallers couldnt figure out, dealing with snags, slides and blowdowns.
he is not very tall, but he flicks that saw around like nothing.
look at the powerhead- it comes up to his knees :scared:

Shredd its a hybrid of both HB & RN , Bvas the jig is basicly just 4 post but I had a stretcher bar and stretch the crap out of the string before serving the loops and stretched it again after I will shoot it in good tomorrow maybe it will stretch out more !

I dug birdshot out of a hop hornbeam stave. Stave is stable condition, gonna be in traction all night to correct a spine alignment injury but I expect it to make a full recovery.

Life is to short to pass up anything that could potentially be bow wood!
