I don't fool with hickory much because I have so much osage. I save the hickory for my beginning bow students. I had a mis-cut hickory stave and decided to trick it out and see what I could get out of it. So far I have flipped the tips and have it about ready for the short string(right limb is still too stiff). I toasted the belly yesterday and am letting it rehydrate  for a few days before I proceed.

Eric, when you toast the belly before final tillering then what is the effect on the the toasted belly by the scraping?  Do you have to re-toast?

Finally got the two kid's bows I've been working on clear coated.  Now I just have to make the arrows for them.  I turned some nice poplar shafts.  Just waiting on the 4" SC fletchings from Sagittarius to arrive.

Speaking of arrows.....

I feel a little dirty, but I finally broke down and decided to try some carbons.  They're the Gold Tip Traditional Only in a 400 spine.  125 grain tips.  I did the cresting and custom, lime "better not lose them in the woods" green fletching.

I'm going to try them out today.

It has been my experience that one has to do a bit of retillering after toasting, no need to re toast as the scorch goes deeply in the wood.

I made a bow rack for the auction/raffle table at the Marshall Michigan shoot next week.  I made it from a black locust fence rail that my grandpa cut and put up when I was around 4 or 5 years old.

Very cool Clint, Im cleaning up one of those staves I split last week end to send to my buddy in New Mexico he makes awsome native style bows and has a hard time getting hedge & this stave is just about perfect for the shorter native bow !

I glued a set of lams together, B Walnut cores and Osage belly. If I can get the boo worked down ill be all set.
Life is to short to pass up anything that could potentially be bow wood!

It has a bit of a dog leg to it but gifting it to Brad Smith so he can make a bendy out of it , just about perfect for it , it has some nice natural reflex , I got 2 of them done hopping to get the others done this week end !
