Taper rate for R/D takedown
« on: January 15, 2018, 08:47:00 PM »
Ok so what is the most common taper rate for a r/d longbow ?  Would a single taper or multiple tapers be better? When a build a recurve I use a single.002 taper and put veneer on either side. Wondering if you could do the same for a longbow and use a parallel to get the stack thickness

i build the kenny M longbows.
i like them, and we all like Kenny   :D   right?
his bows call for a .003 taper with 4 lams+ glass.
so i put the two tapers on the back- with two thin parallels on the belly, so that they can go up the ramps easily..

It depends on the design.

I try to grind the .002 to .100 butt and put it on the belly side. better up the ramp.

Hi Mike,

Like Wayne says, I use .003 total, but I put a .001 on belly and .002 on back on one pc bows.

On my TD, I use the same taper but it doesn't matter where you out the tapers as long as your limb pad area is flat so it fits the riser.

I usually use a power lam and tip wedge, tho I'm not sure needed on the TD because of the short working limb.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I do a total of .004 taper for a r/d bow. My own design.

Glass
Veneer .001 grind
Core .001 grind
Core parallel
Core .001 grind
Veneer .001 grind

I also use 0.003 total, like Kenny with the 0.002 on the back, 0.001 on the belly side of the wedge. Tapers are on the lams, not the veneers.

Thanks guys. I got one planned for a future build. I have it all drawn out just need to make a form and get started. I think I'm going with a 16" riser instead of the 18" I been making. Well see what happens.
