**** staves - worth it?
« on: January 24, 2018, 06:46:00 PM »
I went looking around for some prepared staves the other day and found quite a few staves of different lengths & such on **** for a lot less than what I usually find on many vendor websites.  There were some hickory staves for about $50 and Osage for about $70 (not including shipping).  Are these likely to be any good at that price?  Are there any good **** vendors who you'd recommend using for non-premium woods, like hickory?

calling hickory a non premium wood can cause a fight in some parts  :)

buying wood online is always a risk. buying from an established vendor is safer but you are going to pay for that security .

I wouldn't buy a stave without seeing it in person.

I've had plenty of osage staves off **** and never had a single problem. Use your eyes and ask for plenty of photos.

I've bought a couple osage staves off of ****.  They were better in person than they looked in the pictures.  They are still drying though, haven't worked them yet.
From my limited experience, it seems that the vendors selling staves know which ones are good for bows and price them as such.  You could find one that fits your criteria and post a link here.  I'm sure the experienced self bow guys can tell you if it's a good buy.

I put a few on there every now and then.  I haven't had any listed for a while.  I take a lot of pictures including close ups of any flaws.  I want the person to know exactly what they are getting.

Cant beat ol' scrubby for staves. I'd lean his way if I needed one. Nobody is more honest and nobody backs what they ship like he does.
