Weldwood glue for fiberglass
« on: March 13, 2018, 01:15:00 PM »
I know Smooth-On EA-40 is the go-to and I may get some of that someday. However, I happen to have some weldwood plastic resin glue and I'm wondering if that would bind to fiberglass? I know it works good on wood on wood designs but thought I would check to see if anybody has experience with it working on fiberglass? On the packaging it says
Quote
bonds porous or semi porous materials such as high pressure plastic laminations to Wood, plywood, hardboard, particle board, leather, cloth, or cardboard to themselves or to Wood. Bonds wood or wood veneers in cabinet and furniture work, hobby applications, roof truss plates, furniture, and structural beams. cured resin resists oil, gasoline, paint or lacquer solvents, and fungi.

I would call their tech support team and ask them. I kind of doubt it will work.

my suggestion would be to glue up a 12-18 inch piece
that will flex set it aside for a period of time and
see if it will hold up.  My experience with it is it wont hold up with vibrations or flexing or time.

If cost is the issue there is guys around here that use Urac which you can get pretty cheap but doesn't last as long I had a can I didn't use for a year and it went bad.

It is my understanding that even using EA-40, glass peels off the lams easier than the lams come apart. So maybe glass doesn't bond as well as wood. Not sure how weldwood would hold up there.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Cost really isn't the issue other than I don't have it and don't want to spend $50 bucks when I already have stuff that might work. Smooth On is relatively cheap per oz compared to other epoxies, T88 might be cheaper, but not by much. The downside is I believe it only comes in 2 pint cans, no smaller. I don't know if I would use that much before it goes bad.

Urac sadly isn't made abymore, but is replaced with unibond 800 or something. It's comparative in price and sized containers to Smooth On so that doesn't really help me.

Weldwood is considerably cheaper then most everything except titebond 3. I'm not sure if it's an epoxy per say, but it is a resin glue.I just happen to have it so I was wondering.

I think I'll call the manefacturer, and if they don't know then I'll try a test piece out like was suggested.

Shop around for the smooth on.  Check Kennym's website.  In the end, glue is not that large a portion of you material expenses but if it's not the right stuff it becomes very expensive!

I think Mike from Pineholow sells small tubes of EA-40 ,  me personally I would rather have glue go bad then a bow go bad         :(    sombody posted about a month or so back had a cheap source for unibond 800 like $20 for a big jug. I bought the 2 pint cans of EA-40  from Kenny pretty resonable !

Well, I emailed DAP. They said that they don't think it will bond very well to fiberglass. I still might do a test piece anyway and see how strong of a bond it is once I get some fiberglass.

If you are going to all the work and expense why not use the appropriate glue.It would be a shame to get the bow put together and have it blow apart because the wrong glue was used.

It's more of curiosity now. I don't have a bow I'm planning on using weldwood on now, it's more of a hypothetical. But I definitely wouldn't try it on a bow without testing it first on a scrap piece.

I'm curious, did you ever get to test this out?  I'm sitting on a bunch of WeldWood plastic resin.  Got it for wood to wood/boo, but if it works for glass....

I don't think you can test in a scrap piece. A completed bows design is unique. Weldwood, rescorcinol, unibond aka uraq will not work on glass to wood. Only wood to wood.
