2nd Arica Hunt!
« on: July 22, 2011, 11:31:00 AM »
Well, I just returned from my second hunt in South Africa and it was another great experience. Although I did not bag as many animals as my first trip, I saw WAY more(and different) animals than on my first trip. He is a few pics of the animals I shot:

1st up is a Duiker:

Next is a Red Hartebeest:

And last is a really cool Waterbuck:

The Hartebeest and Waterbuck were not on my wish list but i could not resist them when given the chance. All 3 animals were shot with my Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow (50#@29.5"), 30.5" GoldTip 55/75 arrows, and 150gr GK Silverflame broadheads.

See ya later,

Bisch

Nice Bases on that Hartebeest!  And the Waterbuck?? They are pretty amazing.  I've never understood why they are one of the only species sporting such a thick coat and long hair in all that heat.  Sort of defies logic?  So glad to see the effectiveness of your equipment that many would consider too light.  I'm using the same sort of set up so this really boosts my confidence.  I understand from some posts on another thread that there were some lows as well as highs on this trip.  Care to share?  there's certainly lessons to be learned from all the experiences.

The low point was the very first shot I got to take. I lost a Blue Wildebeest on my first trip to Africa so it was on the top of my list on this trip. The first animal I got to shoot at was a Blue Wildebeest at 14yds, broadside. I still do not know what I did but I made a terrible shot. The loss was totslly due to a terible shot on my part and in no way due to the ineffectiveness of my equipment. I missed where I was looking by 18" to the left and hit the Wildebeest square in the middle of its neck. We tracked it following blood for a little ways. When the blood ran out we followed the herd for the rest of the day. We caught up to them several times but could not figure out which one was mine. The PH had a rifle and I told him to put him down if he got the chance. Even that did not work because they were a ways ahaed of us and we just could not make a clear distinction as to which one was the one I had shot. Now I have to go back one more time just to make a good shot on a wildebeest.

I have a very similar story with a gorgeous Gemsbok Bull from back in 07.  Round two in 27 days!  Thanks for sharing Bisch.

Looks like a fun time, Bisch. Misses and bad shots are part of the challenge of hunting. They are going to happen, and anyone who says he has never make a bad shot is either a liar, or he hasn't flung many arrows at animals.
