When I came out of the woods this evening from taking down a treestand and clearing debris and brush, and then loading my equipment in the back of my truck I look up and see this big Ole Ground Hog out for the evening feed. I was surprised that it did not hear me or see me, because I was not trying to be quiet or anything like that. I said Lord please let me get him. As I usually always do, I had my bow in my truck. So I reached in, got my bow and looked for a way to stalk him. When I first saw it, it was about 75-80 yards away. I was able to use what brush and trees that was there to get closer. I had to expose my self openly for a brief period, while trying to get from the tree to the johnny on the spots. I was able to make it up behind the johnny on the spots out on the old negro ball field without being detected by the Groundhog. I peered around the side of the toilet and the Hog was still feeding, and with the arrow already nocked, I came to full draw and let my first arrow fly. It fell just short, and it seem to scrape his undersides. The Hog jumped up and looked around, I ducked back behind the johnny on the spot and got another arrow on the string. When I looked around the toilet again, the Groundhog had resumed feeding. It was broadside slightly quartering and I came to full draw again and took more careful aim and let fly. The arrow took it right behind the shoulder from 31 yards. It made it to the inside of the woods and expired. When I found my first arrow, it had indeed drew blood, but it was not enough to make the Hog go scurrying for it's hole somewhere inside the woods. I would say this thing weighed every bit 15 to 20Lbs. When I skinned this Hog, man you should have seen all the fat this thing had on it. A nice warm up prior to our Maryland season opener on Sept 7. Shoot Straight and Good hunting.
