From the Bottom Up - A Short Story...
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:17:00 PM »
I went bear hunting this weekend, wild adventures and experiences to say the least....but those stories will have to wait....

Saturday afternoon around 3:00 I was easing down the right side of a road bed when I saw a doe coming up a bank on my right out of nowhere.  She stepped out into the road about 10 yards ahead and looked right at me.  Get this,...she acted like I wasn't even there...looked ahead and walked across the road and scampered up a steep bank to the top and just stopped and started looking around left and right.....

I eased up the road a bit and crossed over to the left side of the road trying to find a shot, one which I would have to 'manufacture' to get into the goodies under the limbs.  I leaned right, squatted and laid a pretty sever cant on the bow.  After all she also was pretty severe...severely uphill and quartering away...

I drew the bow and released all in one motion and the arrow magically went right were I was looking.

The arrow made a very audible 'slice' sound as it entered and I saw the arrow still in her when she made her 1st leap, then I heard a 2nd leap and then nothing, nothing at all.  So I backed out.

Like I said, I was bear hunting, and was doing so with Tee Bone of Medicine Bear Archery, and one of his Badger Broadheads.  I knew Tee was still at the shooting course and hadn't left to hunt yet so I went to get him to help me as I needed to get back to bear hunting.

Here's what we found 8 yards from the impact....

Here's the angle of the arrow, from the bottom up. (Note the broadhead almost breaking out)...

And here's the reason for the shot placement...

Thanks for all your help this weekend Tee....I had a blast.  We'll have to get after those pesky squirrels one day.     :campfire:

A compound shooter would still be trying to figure out how to make that shot...a fellow I know once shot a moose with his longbow parallel to the ground and shooting underneath the cover...hunting  in tight and creating opportunities is what we are all about...I am hunting mule deer on the ground in typical whitetail cover and I have a feeling success will only come in much the same way yours did...thanks for keeping me motivated

Can't help but think of your form clock on this one...no chance for that on this shot...at the same time all the basics, ingrained from many carefully launched arrows, is what made that shot happen...to me that is the only true instinctive shooting

Dave....believe it or not...but the clock was keeping perfect time.  Proper alignment can be taken to all sorts of positions....that's why it so important.  My body and bow might have been contorted, but  the clock was 'on time'.

That's why I preach it so hard on the shooters forum and put a segment in the TradGang DVD.

Thanks for the comments...no bear yet, but man I don't see how!!!

Got footage of one that rounded a mountain laurel at 5 yards....again..another story at a later time... bear season aint over yet!!!..    :campfire:

Sounded like that Doe was looking but not seeing. Sometimes their mind is expecting to see something else(like another deer). She might of thought you were another deer, or she was so preoccupied that the sight of you didn't compute.I was standing on the edge of a field one day while deer hunting. Three deer which were spooked by near by hunters in the woods, came to the edge of the woods were I was standing in the field. Upon hearing the hunters, one of the Does came into the field, saw me, and trotted right over to me. She stood only 5 ft. from me looking into the woods. She probably stood there for 30 sec. before joining her friends as they broke out into the field and headed for safer turf. I assumed she never really looked at me, mistaking me for one of her cronies.
Big congrats Terry, way to think on your feet and get it done. Nice shot.
