If your nock breaks; you don't want the string to split down your arrow. So the nock goes on the arrow in such a way that the string lays across the grains; not with them.

Doing what Brian said will also put your arrow grain in correct alignment with the bow.

Just remember that the slot of the nock goes 90 degrees to the grain.
If you take the lines of the grain, and superimpose them on the slot of the nock, you get a plus, and that's a positive in my book.

I visited my granddaughters yesterday and when my wife showed up I asked the girls who that was. They told me "That's your Mom". So now I have to ask Mom if I can shoot in the basement, but only if I promise not to hit the door

I'm sure that scored big points with your "Mom"!

Looking from the top down.
Nock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> point
The way I put my nocks on is to set the shaft on a table with the nock end facing to my left. I find where the v's are pointing tward the point and are on top. Then I line up the throat of my nock to bisect the point of the v. I always line up my nock index so that the v is on top and pointing toward the point of the shaft, I don't know if this makes sense to you, but that is how I do it.
