Need help with rawhide patch...
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:00:00 PM »
I got a fret starting at the fade on both limbs directly off the riser of my hick backed Jatoba bow. 47# @ 27".
I want to adda rawhide patch, maybe on (both belly and back)?? to stabilize the area...I'm thinking on wrapping over the patches with thread soaked in superglue??

Am I on the right track here? If anybody has done this I'd appreciate the proper how-to.
Thanks.

Compression failure will not be helped with a rawhide patch.  The best it will do is keep it from blowing up or maybe, maybe move the neutral plane just a bit towards the back.  But that is a long shot.  About the only way to really fix them is to remove the compressed wood and add a patch or lighten the bow to relieve some of the stress.

Well John, if I can keep it from blowing up, then I'd be happy with that much! LOL...

Being that close to the fade, I don't know if I could get a wood patch in there...but I'll look abit closer.
Thanks

I didn't mean it will keep it from failing just from sending splinters all over the room.  When I find frets, I consider the bow dead.  It's easier and more efficient to build another.
