I have had way to many irons in the fire and hadn't had time to get out turkey hunting during the 5th period of our WI season. Yesterday was the last day, so I took off early from work and headed for the turkey blind.
2:30 PM patiently waiting for a turkey to find my decoy
I had been calling softly every 1/2 hour and was just about ready to take a nap, when I thought I heard something and I peeked out the right window of my bale blind and I had a Tom at 5yds heading to my decoy!
As he moved toward my decoy I moved into postion for a shot and the bird then turned and started to walk away! He must have been spooked from no movement from my decoy, so I opened a window on the other side and when he presented the shot...I took it. He ran off with my tracker string peeling out and stopped out of sight 30 yards away in the tall grass and weeds.
So then the waiting game began, you know the things that go through your head after the shot. I think the hit looked good? I hope the hit was good? Should I wait a 1/2 hour? Boy I hope I made a good shot? Yeh, it was good, wasn't it. I dont see him moving. He must be dead?
So after the almost 1/2 hour wait I got out and followed the tracker string with another arrow on my bow. The next thing I see is my arrow fletching sticking up out of the grass and low and behold there was my bird, not 20 yards from the where I shot him.
Upon cleaning the bird, I did an autopsy and found that my broadhead had angled forward and sliced of the top of the heart. Nice bird 25lbs, 11 1/8" beard and 1 1/8 spurs. Just glad that I was able to connect with such limited time to hunt.....I like it when a plan comes together.
