Mini Elk...
« on: September 12, 2015, 09:10:00 PM »
Had an elk hunt in Washington cancelled because of the fires/drought and land closures, a bummer for sure. Im lucky to live in an area here in MD that has Sika, a mini version of the elk. Been hunting them for a long time and never tire of it. They respond to calling very well. I got settled into my stand this morning in the dark and because of the high tide I heard deer moving around in the water almost immediately. I waited till shooting light and one lone mew on my call and I heard deer coming. This doe stepped out of the marsh at 13 yards and I made a good shot, the 1st one I have ever gotten with a 3 blade VPA. The deer didnt go far....It was hot and muggy this AM and I was dripping wet when I finally got this one to the truck but finer eating you'll never have

When is the season on them? I will be in Portsmouth VA in November and would love to try for one.

Good shooting.

Nice shot John.   I see you have that Titan working for you.  I shot a couple doe last year with a 200 grain VPA.  They do a nice job.

Congrats. I hear they are excellent eating.  I was supposed to come down for a hunt this year but had to cancel due to my partner's family emergency.

I hear they are excellent eating.
