Author Topic: Riser wood to pair with myrtle limbs? (Read 4494 times)

I am coming up on a bow build and I have been thinking I want some really nice myrtle burl limb veneers with a lot of depth and shimmer to them but can't think what would be a good riser wood tonpair with it. What do you all think would look good?

I guess it depends on whether you would prefer a contrasting riser, or one with the same tonalities as the myrtle limb veneers. I've seen myrtle limb veneers that vary from fairly light toned to medium toned, like coffee with cream, but never any darker than that. I have a Toelke Lynx with fairly light toned myrtle and a contrasting bocote riser. I also have a Black Widow with darker tiger myrtle limbs and a riser that is almost the same tone, but made out of different wood, I don't remember what kind. I like them both.

I have 4 bows with myrtle limb veneers, 2 with ebony risers (Robertson's) and 2 with zircote risers Black Widows). I think no matter how the myrtle turns out a dark riser will look good with the myrtle. All mine are longbows, can't speak for recurves.

The other thing you should consider is whether you like a bow with heft to it or would you prefer a lighter weight. Some woods are more dense than others. Curly maple, for example, is a lot lighter weight than bocote. Your bowyer should be able to tell you which woods are more dense than others.

I resisted getting a takedown for a long time because I thought the weight of the bow was more than I preferred. I handled a takedown with myrtle in the riser. I ended up ordering a Blacktail with Myrtle and cocobolo riser and myrtle limb veneers I like the combo! It's been my main hunting bow for some years now.

Myrtle goes with everything. I prefer a darker wood with it. I have a Robertson that is myrtle and rosewood.

Ooh I like that curly mango riser, cocobolo or a rosewood would be nice if they had a lot of figure in the grain. I don't want any plain woods on this particular bow.

I have had three bows with myrtle limbs.
A Tall Tines Riser was Chechen (dark)
A Tall Tines Stickflinger is ...Chechen (light)

(I like Chechen a lot)

The third one is a Liberty Chief with...
Myrtle. Why complicate things? This is a very nice looking bow with good performance.

Myrtle/Walnut or Myrtle/Cocobolo would pair well together.

Since Myrtle is became so popular I have seen lots of bows with those veneers and I like them all. But I think a dark riser wood can match better, like Macassar, dark Rosewoods, Wengè, Ziricote and Gabon.
