Self bow doe
« on: March 29, 2018, 01:59:53 PM »
Well let’s give this ol’ new site a try! Posting pics was always a tricky business for me excited for the new format, thanks guys for the hard work!!
Thought I’d share a special hunt from last year with y’all. Was the last weekend of the season this past season. I had one last doe tag burning a hole in my pocket and this nice corner of the freezer begging to be filled up. I have a real nice doe slammin spot not far from my house and the wind was right. It was a cold December eve in the teens so I knew they’d be moving. As I was packing up my black widow recurve as usual I walked past my boys room and on their wall I have a self bow I made 8-9 years ago hanging on the wall with some river cane arrows. It’s always been a dream of mine to shoot a deer with it and i has it on my bucket list of things to do “someday” back when I made it I hunted with it a bit and missed a couple deer clean with it and kinda put it away.
Well long story short I had this sudden crazy idea to take it out. I had plenty of time so I got it down and carefully strung it and worked the limbs as it hadn’t been strung in years. I grabbed a few cane arrows and went down to my basement and started shooong my bag target and to my surprise it was sticking them in there better than i remember. With my new found confidence in the bow I loaded up and hit the woods.
It was reeeeal cold but sure enough a few doe’s worked their way past about 30 minutes before dark. The lead one was about 50 yards ahead of the others and would stop and look back every so often at them as she came by. She got to about 15 yards perfectly broadside slightly past me quartering away and stopped to look back. I thought oh my perfect! I was actually scared the bow would snap in two! I drew as far as I could leaning into it to anchor in the corner of my mouth. (I’m 6’7” 31” draw) I wanted all the punch I could get. Let er fly and smoked her right in the pocket! Blood went everywhere immediately and I new I stuck er in the heart and she was toast! I was so pumped I was jumping up and down!
She only went less than 100 yards plowing snow the whole way! I couldn’t be happier was awesome! My rig was an Osage selfbow about 52@30 river cane arrows I got from my brother n laws property in Alabama. Natural turkey feathers wrapped on the cane with sinew. Self nocked with a bear razor head spliced into the shaft and wrapped with sinew.

Congrats! Quite an accomplishment!

I use to thread fletch arrows.  Is that sinew thread on the arrow?  Reminds me i need to shave a few pounds off of my self bow.  Nice work.

Yeah I was trying to make as natural an arrow as possible for me. Wrapped the fletch with sinew thread. Worked out pretty good they fly surprisingly well for how crooked and all the cane is. Always amazes me how quiet self bows are to compared to my recurve. I had some made up with some abowyer single bevel heads they sell just for splicing into shafts but they needed sharpening and I didn’t have the time. The ol razor heads were polished and ready to go 🙂

Way to get it done!

I’ve only killed 2 critters with a selfbow. One was a warthog on my first trip to Africa. It was pretty cool because as the PH was watching me practice, he told me he did not think that bow could kill a warthog. I told him not to worry; that if I did my part, the bow would surely do it’s part. Later that afternoon, right at dark, I made the shot, and it was perfect. After the PH saw the holes in both sides of that wartie, he told me I could shoot anything I wanted to! The second was with a bow a good friend made for me, and I was the first person in history to kill a critter with one of his bows!

Both were pretty special!!!!

Congrats,

Bisch
