Anything Odd Here?
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:27:00 PM »
I took this pic this afternoon. This is a DOT site near my apartment complex. The deer are usually here in stormy weather, so when I came home and it was raining, I took the dog up that way for a walk. These two were bedded, but got up to give us a look.

Killdeer
  :wavey:
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

It looks like the spike buck just threw a used tire into the woods.   :banghead:

I remember a guy starting to drag his New Year's Day buck...and the antler popped off in his hand!! I don't think I have ever seen a buck this late with the antlers. They are supposed to be growing new ones now!

Kathy funny you should post this.Last Friday coming home from work on RT 78 there was a dead buck on the side of the road.How'd I know? Still had his rack. Looked like a sixer.I didn't say anything to any one because I figured no one would believe me. Strange eh?

Deer with hormone issues will keep their antlers longer. I've seen bucks still in velvet in december that had suffered testicle injuries.

Killie,
It's all global warming.
It's been a mild winter in the East, maybe he hasn't been stressed more than normal.

It is not uncommon for bucks to still have one or both antlers in the middle of April around here.  I don't really get too geared up to shed hunt until turkey season is open.  Then I can hunt turkeys, antlers, and Morels all at once.

A few years back I had a 6point on my place with antlers in July. They were spindly and bleached white. Must've never dropped. On another note I found my first decent shed ever this last weekend, a left side with 4 nice points!

I often see bucks carrying well into April.. I don't think I have ever seen May.. Conversley I have seen them shed in mid December. When they shed is still one thing the "Experts" have yet to clarify.. I have heard several theories but that is all they are.

It's an individual thing, but the younger ones tend to keep the antlers the longest.
