My heart goes out to you for your loss, and the way it was caused. Continue to keep a clear head, and your integrity by staying on the legal path you are following.

I guarantee where I live it is illegal to just kill a dog. It comes under the animal cruelty laws. People who do so regularly wind up in the paper, on trial, and in jail.

I'm sorry for your dogs. Dogs are truly man's best friend and your neighbor is a rotten SOB.

Sorry.  I have a brown lab that I love and can't imagine losing him like this.  Hope your neighbor gets a just reward.  I agree about seeing if the local newspaper would write an article, including the neighbors name ad business.

I'm going to wait a bit before starting a Facebook smearing of his name. I just don't want to jeopardize any chances I may have of getting him prosecuted. I'll let the world know once I find out more details.

Looking at my rescued Jindo, with all her baggage, I just have to cry.
Abused, rounded up by the county and adopted, I have given her all the love and encouragement I could come up with. I have no children, she and my husband are my family.

A dog is about as mentally competent as a four or five year old child. My dog, one at a time, is my substitute child, I care for her as I would any family member. I have been fear-bitten, and have forgiven and learned.

God help any who would harm her. I do my best to keep her from stressful situations, and she is rarely unleashed.

Your case is far different, with a kindly pet who was killed for whatever sick gratitude this person felt entitled to. May he meet Justice.

Your beloved pup will live in my heart. I may not remember the name, but the crime will petition for justice in my soul.

And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Like many on here, I fear for what my reaction might have been if someone shot my dog.  You are handling in the best way possible and I hope that justice is swift. Criminal prosecution, civil lawsuit for damages, and destroying his business and reputation should all be pursued.  The man is a piece of garbage and should be treated as such.

Another way to draw attention to this would be to have the local paper or tv station come and interview you, then they could put it in the paper or on the news..

Just take the high road and do things right, don't lower yourself to that scums standards..

Focus your anger and grief on sticking to the path your on, I admire you for that, I'm afraid that I'd have an overpowering urge to break his legs and throw him into a crowded hog pen.

Sorry for your loss. I'm on my third lab in almost 30 years. Like a few others, I would be sitting in the County Jail if I were in your shoes. Stay the course and keep us posted on the outcome.

Sorry to hear about this. Around here the humane society would have the guy in jail as fast as if you shot a person. I have always owned labs, great companions.

Very sorry to hear this.
I too would be fit to be tied.
As someone else has said....be careful around this guy..He's obviously a looney tune and a dangerous one at that.

Take the high road...and take it as far as you need to.

Good luck on getting some kind of satisfaction that the sum b!+c# is gonna pay.

I hate to think how I would react to something like this. My wife was killed in a car accident April of last year by a man with 18 points on his license. It is a 1-year misdemeanor in Michigan. Shooting a dog intentionally, however, is a felony here.  Regardless of how it comes out in a criminal court, I'd take that guy for every penny he has in a civil action.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and well wishes.  So far, nothing has happened.  I can't get the deputy that responded to the call that night to call me back.  So, I called to talk to his supervisor.  Turns out he is on vacation.  I have to wait until Wednesday for him to come back on duty.  We have also been in contact with a lawyer, but we are waiting to see what will happen with the criminal charges first. I also got some interesting info earlier tonight.  Turns out that there is another guy that he did this to within the last year.  I am going to contact him to see what happened.  I don't know what the statute of limitations for filing a report on something like this is, but I would like to at least see what the whole story is from this other guy.  I would love it if this guy could get the misdemeanor put on the guy that shot our dogs.  I would then try to get him on the 2nd case and it would be a felony at that point.
