In fact, I have been on the other end of this, when roaming pit bulls tore up a horse of mine, and if you report it, they tell you the dogs aren't licensed and nobody will claim ownership and pay for the damage.  It makes people less tolerant of the next dog they see around their livestock.

Pat,

I think there is always the other side of the coin.  I would have no problem killing an animal that was harming my animal, but I can't even kill a bird anymore without a purpose.

I know it's been awhile, but I have an update for this.  After my continued calls to the sheriff's department, I finally got somebody that was willing to listen and give me some assistance.  The guy that I spoke with is going to send this to the prosecuting attorney and see where it goes from there.  If there are no criminal charges filed against the scumbag, then I am going to file a civil suit against him and get every dime that I can.

My other dog that was shot is still doing okay.  He is still limping around some, just trying to build up strength in the leg that got shot.  It's not slowing him down much though, he still likes to run to the edge of my yard and bark at my in laws when they drive by on the 4 wheeler.

You’re not aggressive enough. He’d be worrying more about me than the cops believe me. I’m not condoning violence but I don’t think I’d be as level headed as you
Very sorry for your loss.

Hey, JakeD, I am sorry for what happened to your dogs. You're doing the right thing, forget all the "if it were my dog, I'd..."
It might take time and stress, but I am glad you are keeping your head on your shoulders.

Good luck

I think Jake is probably doing the best he can.  A lot of us on the sidelines who love dogs, which includes me, would be happy if he would go over an wring the guy's neck.  But then Jake's life would be ruined, and his dog would still be gone.  Or maybe the neighbor would turn the tables and wring Jake's neck, and claim self-defense.  No, the only reasonable course is what Jake is doing: try to get law enforcement interested in prosecuting it, or if they're not interested, sue the guy if he can find a lawyer that thinks he wouldn’t just be wasting his money.  You do your best, and then move on.

I commend you for keeping your actions civil.  I know most people would want to take matters into their own hands, but at the end of the day its better to be level headed than to do something rash and end up with charges against yourself.

I miss my dog every single day, and nothing is going to bring him back.  My wife and I loved him like he was our little kid.  He was with me all the time, and loved going places with me and roaming the woods.  He was taken away from us and nothing about it is right.  The best that I can do for him at this time is to try and get him some justice.  The guy that killed him needs this on his record so that he will get a felony if he does it again.  Maybe it will save somebody else from going through the heartache that we are still dealing with.  As much as I want to go beat his face in, it won't help me get him prosecuted.  I can't get much done from inside a jail cell.  Trust me when I say that I would love to go give him the treatment that he deserves.  I just have to remind myself that I have to keep a level head and get to this guy through legal means.

You are handling it as it needs to be Jake. No matter how much the guy needs it, it won't help the cause. If it ends up being a felony, he shouldn't be able to possess a gun anymore.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

The wheels of justice turn slowly...ponderously slow at times, it seems...but they do move as long as you keep pushing. In today's day and age wantonly shooting and killing another man's dog is not only morally and socially unacceptable but it is illegal as well.
Your route is the right route. Your goal should be not only to receive compensation but to impinge upon his firearms ownership. He obviously lacks the moral responsibility to own them.

What your doing is the right thing but,
cant say what Id do but the neighbor and me would have a very serious talk about shooting someone's pet and the consequences that go along with it, this talk would take place in a nice quiet place with no one else around..

Keep doing right Jake! With all the mass shootings lately, I would think law enforcement would give a serious look at this loose cannon who has on record made threats to people and obviously has no regard for life.  I hope he gets his felonyvand has his firearms removed.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

Well, it's been a long time since my buddy was killed, but I got some news today. The prosecuting attorney is putting charges of animal abuse on the guy that shot my dogs and discussed a figure with me for restitution. I'm hoping that the charge sticks and everything goes like it should.

Jake,

I know it wont bring your buddy back, but it will give you a sense of closure(hopefully), and hopefully, your buddy will have learned a very valuable lesson.  I can't imagine the outrage, but I believe you have handled this in a very honorable way!

Good luck my friend!

I am very sorry for your loss and hope everything goes as well as possible.  Any further commentary on the topic would have caused me to be removed from Tradgang.

Horrible!

The pain is great and seems it will never end, many of have been there but never in your situation.

I lost a great mountain cur about a year ago and 3 months later my wife got me a dog I had talked about a few times. A wirehair miniature dachshund, what a great little buddy and still a sporting dog!
