I have already filed reports for criminal charges and am waiting to hear back about what the next step is. I will keep climbing the ladder until I get the resolution I want. I have also been in contact with a lawyer. This man also has a his own local business and a Facebook page for it. Word spreads fast and social media is a good platform to let everybody know what kind of person they would be doing business with.

Sounds as if there are a lot of us who would suffer awfully if such a thing happened to our "best friends". I have a chocolate lab (and a black one, too). They are the most harmless and good-natured critters on the planet. I just don't understand this kind of cruelty. Can you press charges? Won't get your pal back, but this guy should have some consequences for this inhumane behavior. Please take care of yourself. You are in my thoughts.

I am waiting to hear back from the county about pressing charges. So far, there has been total incompetence on their part. I had to inform them of the laws about killing dogs in Missouri. A deputy is supposed to call me back tomorrow and let me know what is going on. If I don't get the result I'm looking for, I will be arranging a meeting with both the sheriff and prosecuting attorney.

Sorry for your loss...it's ridiculous that some people will shoot a dog simply for being on their property even when they aren't bothering anything. As far as the criminal charges,  if you don't get a phone call I'd show up in person and ask for a supervisor. Even if the sheriff isn't in there will be a Sgt, Lt, some sort of shift supervisor on duty. Politely make it clear that you aren't going away and you expect them to help you!!!

Another way to draw attention to this would be to have the local paper or tv station come and interview you, then they could put it in the paper or on the news..

Just take the high road and do things right, don't lower yourself to that scums standards..

Roy is correct on that. There is usually something in the deer regs about shooting dogs also, have you talked to your game warden also?
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I have been in contact with the game warden. Luckily he is a friend of mine and we grew up together. He had the same situation occur to him with his 4year old lab in October. He is doing everything he can to help me out. The problem is that he isn't the game warden for my county. The county line runs between my property and where they got shot. That's what is causing some of the issues right now. The county I live in has been accommodating in every way. The other county sheriffs office has been the problem. They said there was no ordinance against killing dogs in the county. I had to inform him that their county laws don't mean anything, because the state laws will override any county laws or ordinances. So that's what I'm waiting to hear back on. I had to give the guy the statute numbers to look up to show that it was illegal. He said he was going to look at them and then see if the prosecuting attorney will do something or not. One way or the other, I will be having a face to face visit with the prosecuting attorney. I have a folder full of evidence to present to him. And the guy admitted to 2 officers and my BIL that he shot the dogs.

In your sadness and anger toward your evil neighbor, don't allow yourself to do anything illegal or unethical. Outside of that, I hope you can ruin him. Remember, though, if he will do that to animals he will likely do it to people. The loss of a pet is sometimes just like losing a family member. I am sorry for your loss.

I don't understand why someone would  do that and I'm left wondering how I would respond my friend was shot. I'm sorry this happened.

I can't imagine what I would do. It would be the same as someone shooting my wife or son. All I can say is it would be the biggest mistake someone could make. I feel your pain.

It sounds to me like you have a terrorist a neighbor that's horrible I couldn't even imagine having to live next to somebody that did that to one of my dogs

I am very sorry for your loss.  Dogs become an irreplaceable part of our lives.  Their loyalty and love are unconditional and my heart goes out to you.

I would also recommend getting local media involved.  Law enforcement and prosecutors are basically worthless entities and unless kicked in the pants generally won't get out of their own way.  The slob that you spoke to didn't even know the law and that's about all he has to know in his job.  As another on here said I hope you are able to use the system to ruin this idiot.  Barring that I am sure there is a special spot in hell for him.  Keep your cool and don't let this lead you into trouble.

A little more backstory on this guy. He has shot at people that were searching for a deer on my neighbors property. Not his property, but another neighbors property. He has also told my neighbor that he has watched him in his scope while he was on his tractor. These people have all agreed to testify against him if this makes it to court for criminal charges.

A very sad situation. Pets are family and provide unconditional love. I hope you get justice, just be careful and not get shot yourself.

Well, luckily he is an idiot and told both officers that interviewed him, as well as my BIL, that he shot the dogs.  He already admitted his guilt, thinking that he can just shoot any animal on his property that he pleases.  Both of my dogs were collared, and it was the first time that they had ever been to his property.  They were out of my view for approximately 7 minutes.  They went in the woods behind my house and made their way to his property.  I was walking back to my house to get my 4 wheeler to go get them and I heard him open fire.  He shot approximately 15 times.  My lab was shot once in the head at about 130 yards from his driveway.  He was wearing a bright orange collar.  I've been in contact with a state trooper that used to live close by and has dealt with him.  He knows what kind of person he is and is going to make some phone calls as well.

Jake, I’m so sorry. I’ve had labs for half a lifetime, wonderful companions. Nearly worthless for security, but good with the kids. Were I in your shoes I’d have to take a deep breath and remember I couldn’t provide for my kids from prison. Your “neighbor” needs to meet with a series of unfortunate events, but I’d settle for criminal conviction, financial responsibility for the whole thing including pain and suffering, loss of his guns due to felony conviction, thorough web shaming, and replacement cost for a lab.

Watch yourself, this guy sounds like he’d come after you. Keep your powder dry.
