Search function help
« on: April 21, 2018, 03:22:30 PM »
I haven't had much luck with the search function since the migration to the new site.  When I try a search, there isn't much rhyme or reason as to the order of the results.  On the old site you could search by author/handle, but doesn't work for me now.  And could pick a forum to search (pow wow, shooters form, etc) and I don't see that either.
What am I doing wrong?  Anyone else have these issues?

Well....yes.
I wish I had the answers for you.
On the old site I would search with  google advanced search on tradgang.com.
(the old search engine gave me fits)

The search on this new site does seems MUCH improved...yet not as good as a google search was on the old site.
Problem is, until this new site has been around a while, google won't have "got its fingers'" into this site and won't find topics.

I hope someone with more knowledge than me pipes up.

Glenn,
I find the search function to be compatible with the old one infunctionality but the search seems more universal in that it looks for search words within other words not just the the word itself you are looking for which brings up more possibilities to sort through.

To choose which forum you want to search you have to click off the check all default and then click on the choose forum bar for a drop down of all forums, click the ones you want, then click search at the bottom of the forum list.

I just did a search for "search"  in the title for posts by Hermon in the pow wow and two came up - your current post and one of yours with "seaching" in the title  from 2015. That is what I would expect for results for that search.

Just Fyi.
To use a advanced search you need to use the search link on the left by where your profile is.
That is the advanced search. The one on the top right is a generic search.

Also as time goes by the google search will start to work again.
It just takes time for google to find the topics again  because the links have changed.
It takes a while for Google to index almost 3 million posts.
There is no such thing as stupid questions!
Just stupid answers!

Thanks for the help.  Didn't notice you could expand the bottom window and pick which forum to search in.  Played with it some and still can't figure out the pattern on the search results order.  If I remember correctly the old search function listed them from most recent to oldest.  This one is all over the place in age of post.  Will keep trying things and see if I can get the results order figured out.  Thanks for your help.
