Selfies versus Laminate bows

Why does it seem that we have so much controversy between Self bows and laminated wood bows..?  I have read so many arguments against each other its enough to make my head spin.
Some guys say a Selfie is better others prefer Laminate bows.  but its just not what is preferred its also about Engineering and the fine aspects of tillering, wood choice etc.......etc......

Its kind of like pulling into the Grocery store parking lot and somebody is freaking on you because they thought they were first.    As I always say Everybody else is right but you..

It doesn't matter to me what anyone else shoots. I make and shoot selfbows because I like the challenge of both actions. I have made backed and tri-lam all wood(incl. boo) bows, I even made one glass lam bow but I prefer selfbows. I own glass lam bows, one recurve and 2 R/D style bows and shoot them way better than I shoot a selfbow but I still prefer selfbows. I very rarely shoot my glass bows. Trying to say one is better than the others isn't in my vernacular. The end results with all is the same. They can all hit a bulls eye of a target butt or the kill zone of a game animal.

I like self bows and lams... but I only put mustard on my hotdogs. People who put ketchup on hotdogs are exactly what's wrong with this country now.  Ketchup AND mustard? We should pass legislation against that! Maybe in California or New York that's ok but not around here!

But as far as self bows vs laminated... there is room far all persuasion of bent sticks (except horse bows, those are just weird).

I like and make and shoot many different type bows , to me a bow is a bow  regardless of material  they all have different building and shooting techniques but in the end they all shoot arrows, like Roy says to each his own !

It's just personal preference.  Both will get the job done.

Personally I have not seen a lot of controversy over self bows and laminated bows.  Seen some controversy over some other types of bows, but we won't go there.  I like all bows - anything that I have to nock an arrow, pull back on a string, release the string, and propel an arrow.  I own, make, and shoot all kinds!

I make all kinds, with many of the same tools, the same days sometimes, and have them all mixed together hanging on the same racks. Never saw any controversy here.

If it throws a stick downrange I've shot them, and I've made them -- self-bows, wood-wood composites, and wood-glass composites. 

Now I'm working on my first wood-horn-sinew composite, a very short (41" ntn), very light-draw (30-40#) Turkish bow modelled after one in the Topkapi museum.

I think the controversy is mainly about what should be allowed in the primitive class in some tournaments. It used to be any natural material but the biggies have gone to a true selfbow with only sinew or rawhide backing. I tend to agree as we have really pushed the limits on what we can get out of a lam bow nowadays and many look as modern as any glass bow out there.

I am a selfbow guy now but have made a bunch of bamboo backed bows in the past.

All the local tournaments still allow natural material bows in the primitive class.

  I actually have a deep respect for you guys...     It takes a lot to tiller, follow grain and chase rings on an all wood bow and then you are not even guaranteed that it will not break on you...

  So...  Hats off to the wood bow Guys...

I think the only argument I can see for a selfbow vs wood laminate bow would be from someone with a more "purist" mindset.  That is, especially when you get into multiple wood laminate bows, you are relying on formulas and modern adhesives in order to achieve the final product (vs relying heavily on reading a stave and laying out the bow and tillering accordingly). The way I see it is if it flings an arrow to a target faster than I can throw it, it's all good.  To each their own!

Ty -- two-wood composite bows date back at least 3000 years across the cold northern top of Europe and Asia.  Both the Saami people of Finland and the Japanese of the Jomon era 2600 years ago built sophisticated recurved two-wood bows using fish bladder glue and hide glue, without any sinew...  Another name for these bows is Fenno-Ugrian, for the tribes of those areas of the North.

I will try and be a better person and tolerate such a flagrant disregard of social norms. I do however believe that BOTH cheese and onions should be gratis condiments. Chili however is a la carte.

To each his own. I don't know of anyone PERSONALY.. but I have heard of certain taboo defying individuals that actually use mayonnaise!

I will however admit to eating fried fish with mustard and Pommes Frites with white vinegar... but PLEASE don't tell anyone.

That's pretty cool! I did not know there were old wood composite bows. Thanks for that!

And that's not even considering horn/composite bows.

Also, fries with mayo is actually pretty good! I didn't try it until I visited the British Isles. Fries with malt vinegar... meh.

The mayo with fries thing... absolutely! Especially if you mix in some Sriracha or Harissa sauce. White vinegar goes with fries, malt vinegar goes with fish and chips.

(And to keep this Traditional Archery related) Many times I eat my fries with various condiments while I shoot BOTH my self bows and my wood laminate bows... ALL AT THE SAME TIME!  GASP!!!
