Congrats on a true accomplishment!

So many words come to mind.  Lucky, and ill-advised being near the top of the list.

And I say that after knowing someone who shot a big bull with a better shot and less marginal equipment, only to have his next 3 shots into the carcass get stopped by the ribs.  Just looking to give big game hunting with a trad bow a black eye, IMO.

Guess he just got lucky twice in a row?  Dr. Ed Ashby told me that my [email protected] longbow was more than adequate for hunting water buffalo/cape buffalo.

I've shot rabbits pulling 82# and lost them.  There's a lot more to it than just draw weight.  Pretty sure Dr. Ashby knew his stuff.

Yes, in fact he did get lucky twice, with poorly placed but fortunate shot the first time.  He was fortunate to be shooting a small bull, and his 56#@28" bow is a far cry from your setup.  I won't applaud this. There a reasons that most of the PH's and guides won't allow someone to hunt buff with a simar setup.  I would to see a picture of the rib that he busted through.

I wasn't there, don't know the situation, but it obviously worked.  I agree...a 56# selfbow isn't comparable to a 66# longbow, but a 66# longbow isn't comparable to 90+ pounds either.  I've told countless people (when I was a dealer for custom bows) that a double lung with 40# is much better than a gut shot or miss with 100#.  There's a breaking point for everyone, and it varies, but no about of poundage will turn a lousy shot into a good one.  The deer doesn't care how far the arrow buries into the dirt once it passes through...but it does care if it's a double lung vs. a gut shot.

My point is simple.  Don't try to shoot more than you can handle.  Whitetails aren't tanks, and nobody will regret a double lung with 40#.  Everyone will regret a gut shot or miss with 80#.

And I completely agree with all of that.

While I have killed deer and hogs with my 82# ILF R/D longbow,, I typically hunt with weights that are much lighter, and wouldn't sacrifice hunting condition accuracy for weight.  I love that he optimized his arrow/broadhead setup.  I am happy he was successful.  I just feel the trad community dodged a bullet.  You know my sentiments and concerns from my posts elsewhere.
