Broadhead penetration question
« on: March 22, 2008, 06:03:00 PM »
Guys, I was just fooling around today and thought I would try a simple test to see how I'm doing sharpening some WW's.  I shot a 575 grain GT35/55 at 20 and 30 yards out of my 54# Saguaro into a 2" phonebook.  Every time I had about 1/2" of the point sticking out the other side.  Just wondering if this is good/bad penetration, or does anyone else waste a perfectly good phonebook on a Saturday like this?  I know a phonebook isn't the same as a whitetail but I am trying to perfect my methods of sharpening.  :knothead:

A phone book is heaps tougher than a goat, and, I presume, a whitetail.

I'm not sure if it's a really informative test on the sharpness of your broadhead.

A really informative test that I'd like to start doing is suggested on Jonn Teitzel's Tusker Broadheads website:

 http://www.bowhuntingaustralia.com/sharpening_broardheads2.html

He tests the sharpness by cutting rubber bands rigged up in a plastic cup.

I hope this helps.

That is a cool little rig he has there for testing sharpness.  I'll have to try that...Mike

Ben, My dad always has us test our knives in a similar way.  We would just draw it across a rubber band with only the weight of the blade.  I have done the same with my Woodsmans and they don't get far before the rubber bands snap.  I was just trying to try something new.  Mark

Your set up would be fine here where I live. Our phone book is only 3/8" thick   :biglaugh:

Brian, With idaho's wide variety of game I am surprised at your paltry selection of phone book options. Here we have the Pronghorn sized 1/2 inch phone book, the Muley rated 5/8inch book and the monster Moose equivalent 1 and 7/8ths inch areawide book. Colorado Springs has a Cape Buffalo equivalent book and Denver lets you stack all of theirs in line for Elephant equivalency testing.

If you are getting all the way through to the Zs that means you can hunt zebra with that setup.  :D
