What a day! Wrong tags and a Stag Buck Sighting!
« on: June 02, 2018, 11:26:00 AM »
This last weekend I was out with a friend hunting turkeys. We had went up high to get out of the heat and because of the drought we are in. We were able to get into country that can be tough to get into most years this early. Honestly I Hadn't been out since the opener nearly a mouth ago so I was just happy to get on the mountain. Because of water chores I arrived about a hour after my friend so I head out in the opposite direction. I hiked into a funnel I like for deer and elk and was hoping to find a active turkey along the way. Well the turkeys were not liking my calling so I thought I would check out were I have sat a lot in tree stands and ground blinds. In fact the last deer I killed was here in this funnel and I put friends on several elk here(they are never here when I have a tag). I once pass up a spike bull at 10 yards here a couple of days after the archery elk hunt ended. I only had a cow tag! Anyway as I was standing there a bull walk into about 15 yards. He gave me a nice look at him and a easy shot before he got nervous and slowly walked off. After enjoying that moment I walk around to the next draw to do some calling when I notice 6 bucks feeding in font of me. All were nice bucks and one was already as wide as his ears. While watching them the biggest one fed by about 10 yards and never notice me. Another chip shot but wrong season! With all the excitement and with a scheduled meet up time with my friend I headed out. After a lot of story telling with my friend I decide to take him into the funnel to show him the spot. He's new to hunting and this unit so I've been helping him learn it. We had not made it far when he seen some deer coming our way. I could see 3 or 4 small bucks in velvet when I seen this tall rack! It looked like a two tall spikes maybe 20" high with a thick base and some abnormal junk coming out of his head. He was only about 20 to 30 yards away but it was thick timber so it was hard to get a good look him. One antler looked like it had velvet hanging and I could see hard polished horn above. I'm not an expert on stag bucks but that's what I would think this buck was. I'm hoping to get some pic's of him this summer and hunt him this fall. For guy like me this was a pretty cool day so I thought I would share it.
