300 grain broadhead test

Im getting supplies together for a test on some of the more reasonably priced options when it comes to heavy broadheads. Ive seen several tests involving the higher priced heads like ashby, massai and bishop but wanted to keep pricing down to what more average hunters would buy. I believe the most expensive heads in this test would be the tuffheads at $60 a pack. Here are the heads i will be testing this year.

190 tusker concord single bevel with steel adapter making it 315 grains

190 grain cutthroat with steel adapter making it 315 grains

Steelforce 300 grain single bevel

Alien archery predator xtg 310 grain single bevel

Tuffhead 300 grain screw in

Grizzly 185 grain single bevel with steel adapter

Grizzly instinct 200 grain with steel adapter

And finally kodiak 225 grain with steel adapter.

What test medium would you guys like to see for a test medium to shoot into.

Since you're testing 'heavys', how about fresh cow scapulas?

Watching this one    I believe the hide and scapula test will be sufficient. Perhaps 2 scapulas would weed out the winners.

The only issue i have had in the past with testing on  scapulas is variance in thickness and bone density not only from one scapula to the next but even in a single scapula depending on shot location. Normally i would do 1/4" plywood  panels with about 3" separating panels and leather glued to the first panel.

I use a 4.5" thick,slab of minicell foam to test penetration.The 1/4" plywood sounds good as does a piece of hide or leather.

The one thing to remember with flexible foams like this,temperature can change their stiffness.For this reason,if I want to test 2 or 3 different arrows,I do them in one session,so things are consistent.At least try to keep the target medium the same temperature,if testing on different days.Maybe store it indoors and shoot in the shade.

I don't count any shots that hit a previous hole.I guess a person could use a meat thermometer,to maintain a consistent medium temperature.I find 4.5" minicell foam to offer more resistance than a deer's chest.Arrows that have passed through deer,antelope and bear,penetrate about 2/3rds of the shaft length(50-54# bows and heavy arrows) through the foam.I like this as comparisons can easily be made.A pass through can't be very easily quantified and with a hard medium like wood or phone books,the differences are in fractions of an inch,which I don't completely trust.

I like to have no pass throughs (in testing)and for differences to be in inches.For me,it's ideal to use a medium that allows about 2/3 rds of the shaft to penetrate.

Looks like i have a 55# longbow on the way that i will use for the tests. Its an unknown brand but appears to me to be a sas 68" longbow. Also if all goes well i will have my hyperstic coming back to me soon

The van dieman heads dont look bad but are extremely soft. If i remember correctly the rh is only in the low 40's.

Might be. There is a video going around of someone shooting a Van Dieman through a board and then shaving his arm with it. If someone wants to see it,  I could look for it. I am considering using them so of course have interest in info on them.
Not trying to hijack this thread though.  I appreciate people taking the time to do testing.

Not a problem. I had looked into their heads but with the hardness being so low i highly doubt the integrity would be very well especially on a single bevel. Too soft and edge roll will be a big issue, too hard and edges crumble (ashby 315 is bad about this).
