Adding weight to aluminiums...home remedy?
« on: March 24, 2008, 02:24:00 PM »
Looking for a way to add weight to the front of my arrows. Saw a thread a while back about using wooden dowels, but that was for the whole length of the arrow. Looking to get my arrows up to 600 grain from 500.
If anyones got a way to do this at home it would be a huge help as no shops around.
Many thanks all.

Just use a bolt with the same thread as your points. Thread it into the insert a couple turns from the back end and epoxy it in place. That's what some guys did years ago before you could get all of the stuff available now.

nyamazan,

Three Rivers Archery sells an 11/32 inch steel broadhead adapter (http://www.3riversarchery.com/Product.asp?c=57&s=47&p=258&i=4226X) that you can use to replace the alumnium adapter in your broadheads. You could use it with glue on field points too if you wanted. They only come in 11/32, but you could probably grind them down to fit a 5/16 or 21/64 shaft. They come in 75, 100, and 125 grain sizes. An aluminum insert of the same length would weigh around 42 grains, so you get anywhere from 33 to 83 more grains.

If you want to add weight to the whole length rather than just to the point end, I have had great luck stuffing both carbons and alums with rope.  I have found that will add anywhere from 50-150 grains depending on the type of rope.

.22 bullets weigh 40 grains, and can be "bumped up" in a vise to fit into your shaft and glued in place. Just pull them out of the cartridge first!

I will second what brackshooter said.. I can add 100 grains to a 2216 by adding poly rope. it doesnt seem to affect spine in bareshaft testing either. But use the poly as a buddy had a bad experience with cotton rope, he shot a bear, it rolled breaking the shaft, the rope stayed attached to the insert, (i guess some glue off the insert stuck to it) anyway the rope was hanging out the entrance hole acting as a stopper/blood wick, we about never found that bear.. I dont tink poly would do that.

a length of fiberglas fish arrow, or the fiberglas driveway markers you get from Farm & Fleet etc. usually fit perfectly inside 2216 shafts. I do that to build my own fish arrows. Free lost or thrown out arrows from my archery club and a $1 fiberglass blank builds a $20 shaft for a fish arrow.
