XX75 2213 for selfbow issues
« on: July 05, 2018, 02:40:43 PM »
I have been playing with arrow combos for a little while for my Osage selfbow. It is 55 lbs @ 27.5 inches. It has a shelf cut in it with it being about a 1/2-3/4 an  arrow width outside of center. I recently bought some xx75 2213’s. I kept them full length and tried several different grain points. With a 125 gr point they bare shaft tuned like a dream. So I slapped 4” feathers on them and thought I was good to go. Well, now they fishtail and have developed a noise. I have turned the nocks to no avail. They consistently hit where I’m looking and can not tell of any major inconsistencies as far as point of impact is concerned. I haven’t had this issue with other bows but this is my first selfbow that I have gone through the bareshaft tuning process. On this particular bow I started with some Gold Tip trad Arrows that where way too stiff. I then put some 2216’s through it. These flew great at full length fletched with 4” feathers and 175 gr tips. Although showed a good bit stiff when bareshaft tunes. I was hoping to gain a little speed and come up with a correctly spines arrow by going to 2213’s.

Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot tell you your preferences, but i would be very tempted, if you came to my yard to shoot a few, to start out with 45-50 28" bop cedars with four inch four fletch.  I have seen guys bare shaft with stiff arrows that seemed good just to run into things when feathers are applied.  They quite often end up raising the nocking point very high and increasing the brace height.   When shooting by hand, it is possible that a good deal of the arrow is dragging on the bow, while the action of the bow hand allows the the bow to move just enough to give enough clearance to allow good flight, the excess contact is still there.  As a recent personal example.  I had a set of 65 Acme cedars that seemed good out of one of my bows with field points, but the hen feather of the 5.5" three fletch was pointing straight down.  I made a set of broad heads of matching weight and did the nock rotation trick to make sure that i had the hen feather at the best possible angle, while keeping the grain corrected to the bow.  They flew perfect, but there was a definite clack when the arrow left the bow.  First thing I thought of was nock tightness, that helped some.  Next, I gave it a 1/8" increased brace that helped a little more, then I lowered the under the arrow nocking point to 3/32" above level and put the brace height back where it was, that was the thing that made it all come together.  I had tuned that bow with the arrows that had Mercury 11/32 nocks and the vertical hen feather, I first used the classic nocks on the broad head arrows, I notice a couple of shots had a bit of contact with a questionable release with the filed out Bohning classic nocks, which I have now changed to Mercury nocks, I think they give a little bit more forgiveness in case of a chunky release or maybe my filed out nocks may have had variations.   Funny how little things mean a lot with arrow contact on a non center shot bow.

Pavan, thank you for your response. As for cedar arrows, some 45-50lb POC arrows are next on my “to do” list.

By posting this issue I was hoping that there was something I was overlooking or missing that would be an easy fix. I had in the back of my mind the next step is to play with brace height and/or nocking point.

Thank you again for your response.

I do basic arrows for my local friends.  The requirement is that I must see them shoot.  I have a variety of test arrows i use.  That gets me to the spine, then i tweak those to match them. More often than not, the shooter needs tuning more than the bow.

I shoot 2213 and 2215 out of 57-64# recurves with 165 up front. Mine are cut to 30 1/4" for a 29 1/4" draw. They are a lot stiffer than you would think. The 22/64 diameter causes a lot of that. I would bet they are too stiff for your set up.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

I have to agree, to stiff for a bow with almost no window. We used to subtract 5# of spine for that reason.
