Hill Billy Scarf jointers
« on: July 08, 2018, 07:07:47 AM »
My scarf joints are hit and miss but functional, I'm trying to improve them I made the HB scarf jointer for the last bow but it was iffy but worked ,I bought this 10 '' sanding disc for the table saw years ago but don't ever remember using it so I ordered some 40 grit aluminuim oxside paper for it and was going to make some kind of jig for the table saw , what is every body else using ? any tips or tricks ?

I thought of that but it might work with a backing strip but I would think you would get tear out with the thin lams especially on the long scarf joints of the thin ones ,I have a power miter saw or thought about buying or making a hand saw one ! But with sanding you can kinda finesse the joint a bit.

I use a cheap skil 6" psa disc sander that must be near 30 years old, keep wondering when it will quit me ...

Just clamp a little jig to the table and run both lams together  in til the one by disc is done, then trade places with the lams (not turning over, just lift one over the other without turning)  and do the second one.

I'm sure you can make something the same way for table saw .  The saw turns a lot more rpm than my disc sander so it may burn the ends of lams. I'm sure you will figure a method.....
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Yep I will feed them slow I didn't know to do them together thanks ,last time I did them one at a time & hand fit them , I'm just trying to get a good solid joint so they don't pop apart with the deep radius riser bend at glue up !

I had one of those sanding discs for the table saw, but the runout was terrible. The saw blade runs pretty true, just have to careful about those teeth. Flip the miter gauge 180deg and get a 75deg slope, which translates to a 13/16
" scarf on .200 lams.

I do like Kenny and it works well enough.  You just have to make sure that everything is level and/or perpendicular or you'll have gaps when you put them together.  I do a test one 1st, then lock everything in place.

Life is too short to use marginal bow wood
